Thoughts on the 2007 NBA Draft

bucks_draft_disbelief.gif

Bucks
Well, the Bucks picked Yi Jianlian (pronounced YEE CHON-LEN or EE TEE-an-LEE-an) with the #6 pick in the draft.

My reaction was much like the one from this kid above….What the heck??

Kind of a gamble, IMO. However, the more that I read about him, the better I feel. As some have mentioned the potential publicity of having him play in Milwaukee is huge — as it was with Yao Ming.

It helps that GM Larry Harris‘ old man, Del Harris, coached the Chinese National Team. Contrary to reports from Yi’s agent about the Bucks not watching him play in China, the Bucks have seen him in action at least 20 times.

It’d be in Yi’s best interest to play for the Bucks. Yanking him back to China or making a stink will do nothing but cost him money and credibility. If I remember right, Yao had some of these issues before he kicked some of his entourage to the curb and started doing what he wanted.

Here’s some more insight on Yi from a fellow Bucks fan.

Sonics-Celtics Trade
The trade of Ray Allen to the Celtics made me sad. My hopes about the Sonics coming to the Sprint Center in Kansas City with my favorite player, Ray Allen, are dashed to smithereens. Thanks a lot Danny Ainge. Jerk.

I guess I’ll have to sort-of start liking the Celtics now. They have my main man now. At least the Celts don’t have Antoine Walker any more.

I’m still getting over Paul Pierce leaving Kansas early for the NBA. Pierce and Drew Gooden (a.k.a. “Patch”) are about on the same level in my mind as far as former KU players in the NBA. Of course, Pierce is way better than Gooden’ll ever be.

Bulls
Aargh.

The other team that I didn’t want Joakim Noah going to is the Bulls — and what happens? The Bulls pick him. I’ll say it again. Noah is going to be a bust in the NBA. Wrong attitude, can’t score, too much of a wuss physically for the NBA, etc.

Portland-Knicks Trade
You gotta love KU alum and Portland GM Kevin Pritchard retooling with young studs and casting off the last of the Jail Blazers (Zach Randolph). Channing Frye may be OK, but Francis is done.

Portland is shaping up to be really good. With Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy, Lamarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and 4 other draft picks — yikes. They could get really good, really fast.

Yep, the Knicks are the Oakland Raiders of the NBA. Isiah Thomas is the moron.

T’Wolves
I’m really disappointed that something didn’t happen with KG on draft night. Corey Brewer and Chris Richard are going to make it all better?? I don’t think so.

KG deserves a new team. The chorus chanting for the axe to fall on GM Kevin McHale is getting louder. He’s the Matt Millen of the NBA.

Lakers

Ha-ha.  Kobe.  LOL.  Have fun dude.

Anyone else had enough of the Apple iPhone hype?

 holysteve.jpg

I’m sick of the iPhone blathering and all of the talk about Steve Jobs being a cult leader.

(Here’s a link to the 1984 video and the Office Lemmings one.  Here’s a nice interview explaining the Cult of Mac. )

Enough already.

For those of you that think that the iPhone will be “all that,” here’s some things that it’s not.

CSS Trick: Add images to links

This is a cool little video tutorial on how to automatically add an image icon to a link using CSS.

I especially like the fact that this guy has Irfanview as his default image viewer.  That’s the way it should be.

h/t to faithful reader Joe.

What would happen if we elected a Republican president in 2008?

Wouldn’t a Republican win in 2008 cause a major riot?

I’d venture to say that most politicians and news media outlets are enough out of touch with common folk that it could happen.

The liberal news media would go nuts.

Sonics’ Allen to Bulls or Cavs

ray_allen.jpg

Uh, no.

The only move I want Ray Allen to make is with all of the other Sonics to the Sprint Center.

Come on home, Ray.

An observation on the tragic murder of Jessie Davis (and child)

m_image11350fb54919388fad09b08665.jpgplate31.jpg

You’ve probably heard by now that the police officer boyfriend of Jessie Davis is now charged her murder.

Most likely this guy will be charged with two murders.

Can someone please explain to me how the status of this unborn child is regarded as more significant if a deranged boyfriend decides snuff out it’s life as opposed to it’s own mother?

Why don’t they call it a fetus?  Hmmmm.

According to the U.S. Census data from 2005, of the approximately 62 of the 150 million women in the U.S. are between the ages of 15 and 44 years old.

abortionsper1000.gif

Combine that with the abortion statistics compiled by the Guttmacher Inistitute, 2% of women in the 15-44 age group have an abortion every year.  Doing the math here — 2% of 62 million is:  1.24 million abortions on average per year.

So I guess it all boils down to choice?   Again, how is the choice of a killer different than the choice of an inconvenienced mother?

I wish someone would explain it to me.

Medved:Why TV Addiction Links to Liberalism

Interesting article by Michael Medved, who contends that watching too much TV causes you to have a more liberal political slant.

Here’s are some of his points that resonated with me:

  • Excessive TV watching gives us no time for meaningful relationships in the community
  • TV is sensational by nature and not often based in reality — normal doesn’t sell
  • TV “demands immediate activism in order to make us feel better”
  • Lots of TV watching is lots of time wasted.

Lessons from 1st & 2nd Grade Church Camp

Well, I survived three days of 1st and 2nd grade church camp in Bethany, MO (June 7-9).

Being with my son as his counselor was pretty sweet. I was a proud dad — the whole time.

Here’s a few things I learned.

  • If you sleep in the air-conditioning with a wet beach towel instead of your sleeping bag, you will get cold at night.
  • I don’t care if it’s uncool to do all of the crazy actions to the camp songs. You should have seen me getting down on the “Drive the Bus” song. Some of the actions are in the Evolution of Dance video I posted earlier.
  • Yes, 1st and 2nd graders can have a serious discussion about where God came from. However, they may not want your input or like your answers.
  • Kids can actually have too much sugar.
  • Some kids are under too much pressure and responsibility at home. It was really sad hearing about the burdens some of the kids were carrying around.
  • The kids with the biggest mouths are sometimes the biggest wusses.
  • If the boys only knew that someday they might actually like girls, they wouldn’t be so dead-set on getting them back based on some rumor. It was boggling how rumors spread like wildfire and how many clandestine plots were hatched to exact revenge on the girls.

Spriglet #6: Zipper check

zipper1.jpg

Here’s another installment in my Spriglet series.

Nothing’s more embarrassing than emerging from the bathroom with your zipper down.  To combat this possibility, I always, just after opening the bathroom door, poke my finger inside the zipper flap directly under the button of my pants. If my finger goes in, I turn right around and take care of it. If it stops, I let out a sigh of relief and continue on to what I was doing before nature called my name.

Kobe to the Bulls?

kobe_20070619_06_35_26_87.jpg

This made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Hinrich would either 1) never get to shoot again or 2) would get traded to the Lakers in the deal. Both of which are unacceptable to me. I’d have to start hating the Bulls again if this happens.

Can Kobe stand the two Jerry’s (Reinsdorf and Krause) in Chi-town better than Buss and Kupchak?

Hmmm. I don’t know.

Joakim Noah: Too cool for the Bucks

Nice quip by Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel columnist Michael Hunt:

And who is Joakim Noah to turn down a workout with the Bucks? That’s some arrogance, even if the Bucks aren’t his preferred destination. If I’m Harris, I don’t want him, anyway. He’s not strong enough for their needs. They’ve already got one Gadzuric on the roster.

Guess my nightmare scenario might not happen after all.

The effects of ethanol demand

ethanol.gif

Ethanol is touted as the next big thing — the big alternative to fossil fuels. Few are talking about the economic impact of refining corn into ethanol.

Here’s a good article that explains some of those effects.

You can thank the ethanol craze for:

  • higher milk prices of late
  • higher prices for goods that contain corn syrup (which is just about everything sweet)
  • higher meat prices

The government subsidies will keep ethanol available for a while, but the supposed lower prices at the pump will just be an illusion. Lots of other goods will be more expensive.

Not only that, but according to the Iowa Dept of Agriculture and Land Stewardship:

Ethanol has less energy content than gasoline. However, E85 also has a much higher octane (ranging from 100 to 105) than gasoline. FFVs are not optimized to E85, so they experience a 5% to 15% drop in fuel economy. This will vary based on temperature and driving conditions.

How long will it be for normal Americans (like you and me) to get E85 optimized cars?

New owner for the Bucks?

I haven’t heard any recent news about a change in Bucks ownership.   This article caught my eye this morning.

Guess since Craig Leipold is selling the Nashville Predators he’s back in the hunt for a new team.

Here’s some more commentary about his decision to sell the Predators.

Sounds to me that he’s tied to Wisconsin, so there’s little hope the Bucks would come to KC and the new Sprint Center.

Why gas is so expensive

Only blaming “Big Oil” may not be the best way to explain why gas jumps $.25 right before a holiday weekend. After reading this it helped me get more of a handle on all of the factors involved in setting the price of gas.

Sighted:Bucks fan in Independence, MO!?

mil_0295onf2c4xsbfsxye6i.jpg

Here’s how it played out last night, while out shopping at Target with my family: I was walking down one of the food aisles looking for some Cracker Jacks to take to camp this week. A guy walked around the corner and I looked at his shirt. Lo and behold it’s a really cool Bucks shirt.

As I was standing there stunned in amazement, my wife blurts out, “Excuse me, are you a Bucks fan?”

They guys says, “Naah, I’m just a basketball fan.”

Smiling, I said something like , “C’mon, tell me you’re a Bucks fan. I mean there’s not many of us around and they need all the help we can get. I went to a T’wolves vs Bucks game over Christmas and I met the other three Bucks fans. It’d be nice to know there’s another one around.”

He says, “Now if they came to Kansas City, then I’d definitely be a fan.”

I like his attitude. Too bad it’s probably going to be the Sonics coming to town.

Dell & Wal-Mart sitting in a tree…

Wow.   This is interesting.

Dell’s low-end PCs are just that: low-end.   I don’t think it will matter much for those that know what features are good and which ones aren’t.

I mean, really.   Ford and Chevy have low-end models.   Who cares where they’re sold or how they’re marketed.   I’m not interested in them.

My only concern is this: Can Dell deal with the demand that selling in Wal-Mart brings?   Will it have a negative impact on their other services?
