The car design has an "Atlantis" feel to it. You know. Under water, future and techie combined into one. Apparently, function and design can go hand and hand.
My question, "What is the ratio between dad to son time on this project?"
I only ask because I am a father-to-be and I need to start planning out my time accordingly:)
Great job on the video and congrats to Caleb for bringing home the gold for this up and coming winter Olympic sport!
Seriously though, I never won a Pinewood Derby in my years of Scouts. So Caleb is already starting out strong. I am sure he will be an Eagle by 16!
The dad to son ratio was probably 3:1. Can't help it if he screams after touching the random orbital sander. Hehe.
We came up with the design together. We both rough sanded the basic shape with the random orbital sander with 80 grit sandpaper. I did the fine sanding. I cut the groove in the top and the penny channel on the bottom, both which involved sharp woodcarving knives. He designed the shape of the dorsal fin. He sanded some of the dorsal shape with the small sanding drum on the drill. I glued in the dorsal fin. He chose the paint and painted most of it. We worked together to grind the nails smooth with the drill. I set the wheels and got it right at 5oz.
Rachel is thrilled with the size of the trophy. I think her comment was "who's going to dust it?"
That is one serious trophy! Congrats! All the best trophies have lots of dust on them.
