Fabio…err…Walter gets traded

[walter herrmann]

If you’re just waking up, Walter Herrmann and Primoz Brezec were traded to the Pistons for Nazr Mohammed.

Hope Walt gets to play some more now that he’s a Piston.

It must suck to be a Knicks fan

[isiah thomas] First the commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, basically forces you to settle the sexual harassment suit.

Second, coach and GM, Isiah Thomas, asks the team to vote on whether Marbury should play in a game and then doesn’t do it.

Third, Isiah Thomas blames the fans for missing layups and free throws.

Is there not a bigger train-wreck soap opera in the NBA right now?

How in the world does Isiah Thomas still have his job?

Embarassment in Milwaukee

[choke]

I usually only reserve this graphic for the Missouri Tigers, but this deserves the same treatment.

Ugh.

There’s no excuse to lose to the Knicks — who got drilled the night before by the Celtics, 104-59.

C’mon…blowing a 17 point lead??

Embarrassing.

Yi best rookie so far??

[yi yao]

According to David Thorpe Yi’s the best rookie in the league so far.

That’d be nice…except it’s subjective.   (Here’s some further analysis)

You all know I’m not a big Durant fan — or players like him for that matter.  Aaand, I’m a little biased since I’m a Bucks fan.

At least let me be excited that he’s: 1) a rookie, 2) doing well and 3) playing for the Bucks.

Rare combination I know.

For the record: I’m not completely sold on Yi.   If it starts going badly I’m going whip out my Eduardo Najera smirk comparisons.

How Yahoo can improve Yahoo Fantasy NBA

[yahoo fantasy nba]

I’ve been playing Yahoo! Fantasy NBA for years now–well–since 1999 anyway. Yahoo’s Fantasy NBA hasn’t really changed that much over the years.

The new drag-and-drop roster change functionality implemented this year is good.

What has improved it the most, however, is the onset of Firefox and Greasemonkey scripts. Those two things allow us that are inclined to interject HTML and AJAX pieces into the FBB pages.

I developed my game log link script not long after Greasemonkey came out.  It’s now been morphed into several other scripts by several guys more talented than I am. One script in particular is quite good: Yahoo Fantasy Basketball. It incorporates my game log link as well as live stats, etc. Very nice.

So, anyway, Yahoo’s Fantasy NBA is pretty stagnant, even compared with their own fantasy NFL system. Here are some things that I think Yahoo can do to improve it:

  1. Implement the Talk Smack box like in Yahoo Fantasy NFL. I know the NBA season is longer, but the more interaction between the players, the better, IMO.
  2. When a trade is being proposed, make the comment box text appear on the site and not just in the e-mail. Sometimes I want to make my case for the trade stat-wise, and unless the person reads their trade notification e-mail, they’ll never see it. Why not display it after they click the link to the view the trade proposal on the site?  I think it would make for more and better trades.
  3. Please implement a Flash-based version of the StatTracker. The Java-based one is visually atrocious compared to it’s NFL counterpart.
  4. Make the news icons next to the player links mean something.   The yellow post-it-note on fire means too many things.  It could mean they played a good game or that they are out for the season.

More Bucks games like this, please.

[yi]

This makes me giddy. I want the Bucks to have more games like the one last night.

60.3% from the field, 31 dimes

D. Mason 10 for 10, 21 pts
Yi
, 12 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks
Redd, nearing a triple double, 17 pts, 7 rebs, 6 dimes

Hey, Coach K… Keep Charlie V. and B. Simmons on the bench.

Commentary: Bucks unleash hell on the Raptors, Bucks deliver easy win

Oh and how about Chris Paul’s 21 assists last night.  A thoroughly dominating performance over the Lakers last night. That’s always good.

(BTW, no doubt Peja is a good shooter.  I hope he plays in more than 13 games this year.  After all, I did have him on the second team of my Charity Stripe All-Star list.)

So how’s my man Ray Allen doing now that he’s a couple of games into the season?

Glad you asked..

Here’s the same play from another angle.

My Charity Stripe All-Stars

OK. Here’s my criteria: Only players that played between 1974 and now are eligible. Players must have played in at least 500 games or played over 12000 minutes in their career. Only NBA stats count. The rest of the breakdown is subjective, since I like to make stuff up.

First Team

[mahmoud abdul-rauf]
G - Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf - 90.5%
[ray allen]
G - Ray Allen - 88.7%
[rick barry]
F - Rick Barry - 89.3%
[dirk nowitzki]
C - Dirk Nowitzki - 86.9%
[larry bird]
F - Larry Bird - 88.6%

Second Team
G - Mark Price - 90.4%
G - Calvin Murphy - 89.2%
F - Kiki Vandeweghe - 87.2%

Honorable Mention

F - Chris Mullin - 86.5
C - Mike Gminski - 84.3%

Didn’t make the cut/Could be on a future list
G - Jeff Hornacek - 87.7% (he had to make the list because of his free-throw ritual — you know — the cheek thing)
G - Scott Skiles - 88.9% (gotta love his gritty play and his gritty coaching)
G - Sam Cassell - 86.0% (if it weren’t for his complainin’…)
F - Wally Szcerbiak - 86.2% (barely made the minimum # of games cut)
F - Glen Rice - 84.6% (he played for the Heat, Lakers and the Knicks — that’s enough to bump him down here)
C - Bill Laimbeer - 83.7% (how can “Crybaby” Laimbeer not at least be mentioned?)

My 5 reasons why Kevin Durant will and won’t win Rookie of the Year

[durant fisheye]Why he will win it:

  1. The Sonics don’t have any one else who can carry the scoring load. Ray Allen? Gone. Rashard Lewis? Gone. Wally? Uh, no.
  2. No one cares about FG% — just points. Barring injury, he’s going to be their leading scorer. I have no doubt.
  3. He has the agility to play the 2, which makes him a match-up problem for opposing teams.
  4. Greg Oden is out. It’s Durant’s to lose now.
  5. The Sonics are going to slap his face up everywhere. He can dunk, shoot the 3 and he has nice teeth for those shoe commercials. (However, he certainly can’t replace the PR sweetness that is Ray Allen)

Why he won’t win it:

  1. He’s never seen a shot he doesn’t like. He scores a lot of points even when his team loses. It doesn’t matter if his shot isn’t falling either. He averaged 39.9% from the field at Texas.
  2. He’s a wuss. I’m sure this will change now that he’s in the NBA, but I’m still interested to see how he handles the big guys. There’s going to be games where he gets locked down because he’s the only scoring threat.
  3. He’s not a good teammate. Players like LeBron make their teammates better. I don’t see KD doing that in Seattle.
  4. Defense, defense, defense. One of the knocks on him at Texas was that he loafed on “D.”
  5. NBA fans are tiring of players like AI, Melo and Kobe. I know am.

Changes coming to MSG

[zeke surrender]

Welp, this makes it sound like Isiah Thomas isn’t going to have a chance to screw up the Knicks any further.

Let’s review the blunders, shall we?

Anucha Browne Sanders - ’nuff said.
The hiring and firing of Larry Brown.
The CBA - bankrupt.
The Indiana Pacers - fired.
The Knicks/Nuggets fight
The Trevor Ariza for Steve Francis trade
Jerome James, 30 mil
One Year to Fix the Knicks

Must see table tennis vids

[tt ball face]OK, so I’ve been getting back into table tennis. I could certainly use the exercise.

We had a table tennis tourney at church last Sunday and it was a lot of fun. I need some practice. I’m not used to playing singles.

I’ve been playing a little at work, however it’s mostly been NPH Volleypong. We have our own logo and Facebook group if you’re interested.

I’ve also been cruising around Youtube checking out the guys that are really good at table tennis.

Some of the notable players: Jan-Ove Waldner, Vladimir Samsonov, Timo Boll, Ma Lin, Jorgen Persson, Zoran Primorac, etc. (There’s no Americans in the ITTF Top 100, incidentally). I think I like watching Samsonov, Waldner and Boll the most.

So, here’s some of the better videos from Youtube:

2007 World Championships
2006 Best Points
2005 Best Points WTTC Shanghai
Waldner vs Persson
Jan-Ove Waldner domination - Waldner basically embarrasses this guy. Yikes.
Timo Boll age 4 to 1996 - Neat video history of Timo Boll growing up playing table tennis
Samsanov vs Boll

Do us all a favor, Len Dawson…retire

[len dawson]

If I hear Lenny Dawson butcher the name of one more athlete I’m going to take my 19″ Toshiba TV and throw it out in the driveway and run over it with my Buick LeSabre until I feel better.

I don’t know why KMBC 9 News in Kansas City doesn’t just kick this old, alcoholic codger to the curb and get someone in there who can at least get the cue cards right.

Final-Yi!

[yi signed]

Well it’s about stinkin’ time that the Bucks get the deal with Yi done.

My thoughts:

I hope Yi doesn’t sport that jerk-smirk all the time.  That’s the last thing the NBA needs.
That looks like a Robert “Tractor” Traylor sized jersey.

Is Sen. Kohl a shrimp or what?

My thoughts on Vick finding Jesus

[mike vick bobblehead]I saw the clips of Michael Vick’s post-hearing statement. Here’s the transcript if you missed it.

My first thought when I heard his statement was: Hmmmph.

I would have liked to hear more details about his remorse. All of the generalities didn’t really settle right with me. He seemed sincere, but I don’t know. He did after all lie to the NFL and the Falcons management.

Side note: Dogfighting is bad, but can you imagine how bad this whole thing would have been if the Feds had caught him gambling on the dog fights?

I want to apologize to all the young kids out there for my immature acts and, you know, what I did was, what I did was very immature so that means I need to grow up.

A lesson we all need to hear.

I’m upset with myself, and, you know, through this situation I found Jesus and asked him for forgiveness and turned my life over to God. And I think that’s the right thing to do as of right now.

Um, I don’t think we find Jesus, Jesus finds us. Hope it still seems like the right thing after “right now.”

Hey, Paris Hilton found God in jail.

I think the jury’s still out, er..uh, oh wait.

Well, you know what I mean.

My Top 10 Alternatives to Dog Fighting

[Rock, Paper, Scissors]

If you think about it, dog fighting is really a competition of egos. It just happens to be brutal and inhumane.

So it got me thinking… What other competitions would be suitable alternatives to dog fighting? Here’s a my top 10 (in no particular order):

  1. Cyberathlete Professional League / Cyberathlete Amatuer League
  2. Battlebots
  3. Competitive Rock-Paper-Scissors
  4. Robocode
  5. Power tool drag racing
  6. US Air Guitar Championship
  7. Adult spelling bee
  8. Whistling competition
  9. Competitive Paintball
  10. Bocce Ball

If you see any of these in a rap video, don’t forget to give credit where credit is due.

Other NBA Refs Could Face Gambling Discipline

dragnet_cruiser.jpg

It didn’t surprise me to read that there could be other NBA referees caught in the F.B.I. dragnet.  While they may not face criminal charges, they could be slapped down by the N.B.A.

Stern could face some serious credibility issues after his emphatic statements about Donaghy being a “rogue, isloated criminal.”

I hope this all gets resolved by the beginning of the NBA season in October.  I really don’t want any shadows over what’s shaping up to be an interesting year in the league.

Donaghy pleads guilty

barkleygamble.jpg

Of course it this could get worse if Donaghy starts talking.  The big question now: is it isolated to Donaghy and his old high-school buddies or is it a bigger problem?  It could be, as David Stern has said, that he’s the only ref with a problem.  It would be really bad if there were more in on it.

I’d like the NBA to trot out Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan and have them talk about the dangers of gambling.

Sure, those guys have money to blow.  Problem is that the gambling industry is built on the backs of normal people who get sucked in and lose everything.

Selig shows Bonds what he really thinks

bonds1.jpgbud_selig.jpgI think it’s pretty obvious that MLB Commissioner Bud Selig doesn’t like the whole idea of Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron’s HR record.

What does he do instead of attending the game last night? He meets with George Mitchell, former Senator and chief steroid investigator.

I’m thinking that Selig may have the last laugh.

Another reason I won’t cheer for Bonds when he breaks the record

Bonds is a cheater.

Thoughts on the Celtics trading 7 players for KG.

new_celtics.jpg

I’ve been reading the intense flurry of NBA blog-speak surrounding the momentous trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics.

Here’s my conclusion:  Boston got the better deal — in the long-term.   Yes, you heard me right.

Although the T’Wolves got (and will get) some really good, young players in the deal, I don’t feel confident Kevin McHale has what it takes to make it work in the long term.   You know — the Joe Smith debacle, the mid-season firing of Dwayne Casey, Michael Olowakandi, Ndu Ebi, Marko Jaric , etc.

Boston, on the other hand, has new hype and good players right now.  Not only is their fan base invigorated, but they will have a steady stream of free agents that will keep it going.  Sure, Danny Ainge has his critics, but this trade ought to work out nicely.  There’s a lot of pride and history in Boston.  More than in MN, that’s for sure.

You all know I’m biased about Ray Allen.  He’s the man.  It’s not going to be like Melo and AI trying to get their touches.  I think Sugar Ray and KG will be good team players.   Should be exciting.
