I’m so giddy about what Amazon has released this week — the Android App Store, Cloud Drive and Cloud Player.

There’s little doubt that Amazon’s core competency is selling.

A free paid app every day deal is absolutely going get a lot of Amazon Android apps on Android phones. Amazon has just inserted themselves as a major player in the Android app marketplace.

The installation of the Amazon App Store app was a little on the complicated side, but once it’s pants were on, it made gold records.

MP3 purchases from Amazon don’t count toward in your cloud drive space. Brilliant.

The whole 20G of space for free for a year when you purchase an MP3 album is killer smart. Totally impressed. I’ll probably buy it when my year is up.

The Cloud Player MP3 upload tool is pretty slick and is chugging right along on my computer at home.

Weak playlist creation the Cloud Player is my only gripe so far. I like to create my playlists by Artist. I have to add them to playlists one by one, which is kind of a pain. A little drag -n-drop action would be sweet.

The Cloud Player works well on my Google CR-48. That thing needs a win right now. More about that later.

Love the Cloud Player integration with my Android phone. Finally a decently priced (free) stream of my own music without having to sync my phone and my computer.

If they every develop a cross-platform Cloud Drive desktop synchronization tool, they could give Dropbox (affiliate link) a run for their money.

What do you like about what Amazon rolled out this week?

And when’s the Amazon Android tablet coming out?

// Now playing: Heaven by Warrant

I’d like to thank those guys for the opportunity to do a guest post.

A mysterious box showed up on my doorstep a few weeks ago.

Inside?

A CR-48 Google Chrome netbook.

Little excited? You bet.

Here are a few observations after giving it a work-out.

Hardware

The CR-48 is just the right size. It’s very lightweight and sleek. It feels cool. The black matte finish shows every greasy fingerprint, but that’s OK.

Google took some liberties with the keyboard. There are no Fn, Home, Delete, PgUp and PgDn keys. It wasn’t real apparent right out of the box what all of the keyboard shortcuts were. Here is the best list I found. Ctrl-Alt-/ is your friend.

The clickable touchpad is a real bummer. Two-finger scrolling is often slow and the sensitivity gets wonky some times. Right and middle clicking required some Googling to figure out. (Ctrl-Click/Tap is middle click and Alt-Click/Tap is right click if you’re curious)

Other than the touchpad, the only moving part is a small cooling fan. I’ve only heard it once.

This bad-boy boots in under 20 seconds. There’s no real “shutting down” either. It‘s more of a log-out-and-go-to-sleep deal.

The battery life is amazing. It will last a full 8 hours of continuous use.

There’s a webcam for Google Chat. There’s also a light sensor that will adjust the screen brightness depending on the ambient light in the room. Slick.

I did hook it up to a large LCD TV and it handled it surprisingly well. Seemed to be mirror mode only.

If you’re wondering about the processor, memory, etc, here’s a good summary of all the technical specs.

Software

The New Tab window is the desktop. That’s it. There are some windows that float up from the bottom of the page. Other than that, it’s all Chrome tabs and web apps.

There is some media browsing functionality. The media browser window appears as a window from the bottom of the screen when you insert a device or hit Ctrl-O. It allows you to view certain media files in local storage, on some USB flash drives and SD cards. You can attach or upload files from all of those places.

There are two OS update channels available: Beta and Development. The Development channel is the sandbox for the bleeding-edge new stuff. It’s pretty slow and unstable and gets updated frequently. The Beta channel is more refined and definitely faster. It has been updated once since I’ve had the device. The release included a slew of noticeable improvements.

Yes, you can install Ubuntu on the CR-48 and make it into a traditional machine if you want. It’s complicated, but nicely documented by the Chromium folks.

Options for doing web development

Hitting Ctrl-Alt-T will get you to the limited command-line interface called “crosh”. From there you can use ssh to connect to another box. If you’re comfortable coding from command-line with vim or emacs, this will work.

However, if you need the brawn of an IDE, some FTP tools, etc, then things get a little more complicated and tedious. There are a some cloud-based IDEs/editors like ShiftEdit, PHPAnywhere.net and SourceKit that will work…if you can massage your workflow into them.

If you need more options, then flipping the developer switch switch is the way to go. The switch is behind a sticker inside the battery compartment. Enabling developer mode will provide more unrestricted shell access. This is the starting point for installing another OS on the machine, if you decide to go that route.

I did switch to the Chrome OS Development channel and flip the developer switch. I ran it like that for about a week. Eventually, I restored it back to the Beta channel with an image on a flash drive. It was just a little too unstable for the simple browsing and note-taking that I was doing.

Conclusions

The CR-48 is really more like an iPad (minus the touchscreen, plus a keyboard) than it is a traditional netbook.

How the ChromeOS works with files in local storage is definitely a work in progress. Video is mostly slow and choppy. I don’t see Chrome OS making a lot of mainstream headway until these two things get ironed out.

If ChromeOS and Android converge as Google’s Eric Schmidt suggested then I guess I’ll install Ubuntu on it.

The CR-48 is a nice and uncomfortably simple device. It’s made me think a lot about how reliant I am on local storage.

I’m still excited and humbled that I even have one of these devices. Thank you, Google.

I’ve known about Launchy for a while, but just recently started using it regularly. What a helpful piece of software.

If you’re like me and have about 50 programs running at the same time, hardly ever see your desktop wallpaper and your toolbars take up too much space on your desktop, Launchy is what the doctor ordered.

I would imagine that if you’re a notebook user and the touchpad isn’t fast enough for you, this will help save you some time.

Even better: it’s open source.

Here’s the official blurb, if you haven’t clicked the link already:

Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!

Here’s some nice Lifehacker.com reviews and tweaks.

Google Image Search - Are they ever going to improve it? I’m hardly using it anymore. Why? Because it’s crap. I want to search for images by size. AltaVista’s image search is much better. Sorry, but the Image Labeler isn’t going to make it better.

Google Notebook – I use this quite a bit with the Firefox Add-on. How about some way to move or delete notes in batch. The one-at-a-time thing is killing me.

Picasa Web Albums – I’m sorry but Flickr has them beat. All of my photos were migrated from Yahoo Photos to Flickr two weeks ago. It’s really my first in-depth use of Flickr. It’s been great. I’ve uploaded several hundred pictures to Picasa web albums. Ho hum. As for the Windows version of Picasa, I do a fairly good job of organizing my photos and I’m a big Irfanview fan, so the basic image touch-up things are really of no use to me. Now if it could sort images by dominant color (or something cool like that) then I might reconsider.

Gmail – I generally like the new contact manager. However, if I have one contact with a work e-mail address and a personal e-mail address and I want to add them to a group, it will only allow me to use their primary e-mail address. The whole multiple contact records for one person thing just doesn’t make any sense to me. And why again can’t I search my contacts from the main search box? Does it bother you that you that there’s not an easy way to backup your Gmail data? Have you ever had to migrate e-mail to Gmail? Ugh.

PR for Larry Page and Sergey Brin – One major personal-life slip from either of these guys and it could be huge. The more I read about their social lives, it makes me more, well– unsettled, maybe–that these two young guys have so much power and influence. I watched the feature demo of Android — the gPhone development platform–and I’m like, dude, comb your hair and put on a nice shirt. (Oh and Steve Horowitz, taking a swig of water before a presentation will help with that dry mouth thing.) It’s almost like they’re too laid back to be taken seriously. I kinda feel the same way about Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

Watched Happy Feet last night.

I’m sorry, but it was a load of environmentalist, secular crap.

(Let me just say this before you get too worked up: I’m not anti-environment. I’m big on good stewardship of the environment. I’m an Eagle Scout and anyone that knows me knows one of my biggest pet peeves is littering — just ask my kids. However, environmentalism is not my god and the movement is not my religion.)

I digress.

This movie reminded me of the overt, tree-hugging drivel in Ferngully.

Not only that, but nearly every song had some sort of sexual innuendo in it. How about Salt n’ Pepa’s “Let’s talk about Sex” and Boyz II Men’s “I’ll make Love to You.” Oh, yeah — in a kid’s movie.

I also thought it was:

derogatory to Latinos

anti-religious/anti-God/anti-religious establishment (e.g. the Elders of the High Council)

pro-gay (Mumble was just “born that way”)

Add this one to the should-have-never-let-the-kids-watch-it list.

If you want more details about what I’m talking about, check out this Screen It review or this Christian Spotlight review.

Ugh.

Been listening to the new Rendezvous album from Consuming Worship on my way to and from work for the past few days.

As for my overall impressions:

It’s not really a corporate worship music CD like I was expecting it to be. It’s a listening/personal meditation/worship CD. I can (sort of) sing along with most of the songs, but I can’t envision any of these songs as part of a corporate worship service.

As for my taste in this worship music — In general, I like lots of LOUD guitar and drums. If it’s not rousing and upbeat, I have a hard time getting into it. I wish Rendezvous would have recorded the album with a live band instead of everything synthesized. I think #4 and #9 could have been even better recorded with live instruments.

The cover design and the inserts are stinkin’ awesome. Props to Brandon Hill on the design.

Here’s my take on each of the tracks:

Oxygen – This one’s pretty good. Probably my third favorite.

Worthy to Be Blessed – Not too bad.

You’re Everything – The lady that sings this song sounds like Twila Paris. I’m not a big Twila Paris fan. It’s a slow song, too. Next.

Desire of My Heart – I think this is the best song on the CD. It’s catchy and there’s some guitar in it.

You Are the Artist – Really good words on this song. The vocals, well, it’s that whole Twila Paris thing again.

Be Still – Makes me want to be still…………zzzzzz. Oh, uh. Yeah. Um…

I Stand Still – Songs that tell stories are good.

I Thank the Lord for You – Er, Twila Pa… Next.

Psalm 30 – I think this is my second favorite song. Nice and upbeat.

Blessed Be – I can’t get into the smooth jazzy, electronic sound. Next. Oh, wait — it’s the last song.

Have you heard it? What did you think?
