What’s missing from Google Voice

google_voice1b

I’ve been trying figure out how I can integrate Google Voice into my phone interactions since I got an invite a couple of weeks ago.

Overall it’s a pretty amazing service. Good job, Google.

I would use it a LOT more if:

  • I could enter a number with pauses, which would allow me to dial an extension.  Then I’d be able use it with my work phone.
  • I could send short SMS codes and use GV with Twitter
  • I could send an e-mail to my GV number like most of the wireless service do.  Then I could use the e-mail address with the server monitoring that I do at work.
  • I could port my home number to GV.  This would be perfect when I wanted to dump my land line.

Google Apps Wish List

Here I am again with another Google Apps post.  There are just a few things that would make my life as a semi-heavy user of Google Apps that much better.  Yes, I am repeating some from a previous post, because these things still make life difficult for me.

  1. Sharing of personal contacts with everyone in the domain — either through a flag on each contact like the calendar system or using some sort of centrally administered master contact list.
  2. Have you ever tried to do outlining in Google Docs?   Sigh.
  3. Can I please have a Microsoft Word-like Document Map function in Docs?
  4. You shouldn’t be allowed to remove the e-mail address of a contact if it’s part of a distribution list.  You get a cryptic error message (or no error) when you try to send to the list by typing the name of the distribution list in the “to” box.  Tracking down this problem is a pain.  That scenario shouldn’t be allowed or handled better.
  5. Allow the admin to create a mailbox and manage forwarding without having to log into the specific account.

How about you?  Are you a Google Apps admin/user?  Have any suggestions?  You can make your voice known here.
