These days children are treated like noisy little pets, neglected, or spoiled so much that they're controlling the whole family. It's obvious (at least to me) which parents don't care about their children. My family is more important than my career and my entertainment. I honestly can't remember feeling the need to escape from my children. That being said, I certainly could do less of "my thing" and spend more quality time with my children. One of the best decisions my wife and I have ever made was for her to stay home with our kids. It wasn't easy and there were times we didn't know what the heck we were doing. Ultimately there were no good reasons to let anyone else raise our children. I don't buy a lot of excuses that people make about parenthood. What is it really? Not enough money in the bank? Career not in the right place? Kids scare you? Dirty diapers not for you? Like your 8 hours of sleep every night? Cramps your style too much? Kids are way too gross? Feel inadequate? Here's my 10 reasons why you should have kids: You get to choose what values you pass along to your children. Don't like that your parents forced you to eat Brussel sprouts? Here's your chance. Kids are fun and it only gets better as they get older Yes, my son did say: "Superman wears a cape with Velcro on it so that when he goes the bathroom he doesn't get poop on it." Children bring joy into your life that you can't measure. The first cry. The first steps. The first words. The first "I love you, dad", etc. Good times...no, really good times. It is very satisfying when they understand something you've been trying to teach them. It's priceless when they do or say something that you taught them without any prompting -- especially in front of someone who's not part of your family. Responsibility brings maturity Life takes on a new seriousness when you are responsible for children. You'll never have enough money or be totally prepared Stop kidding yourself. Your parents love grandchildren. Why not nip those questions in the bud? Your kids may just be interested in something you're doing or something you know... And be convinced that you know everything there is to know about it. At some point, your children will actually help you. Personally, I'm looking forward to my son being old enough to mow the yard. Your parents did. Nuclear families are what makes society work. It's relatively new. It sure is handy if you're building custom preference centers in Enterprise 2.0 business units. The idea is that you can encrypt custom parameters in your email links to Microsite pages and then retrieve the unencrypted values with an AMPscript function. Once you have the business unit MID in the microsite page, you can use it to ensure your API calls are for the correct business unit. In your email you would have this code: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/72a08dc0d0a3772c02a6 In the case where the the subscriberMID is not set, default to the parent business unit's MID, which is accessible from the memberid personalization string. One gotcha: If you build your custom preference centers with Server-Side JavaScript, there's no SSJS function to retrieve the additional MicrositeURL parameters -- you to use AMPscript. Your code may end up looking something like this: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/665bae36a57e055b9e1e For further reading: MicrositeURL() RequestParameter() Personalization Strings Server-Side JavaScript #### A Conversation in 21 Different Languages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3H5D-XxPrI This is a fascinating conversation between Wouter Corduwener and Zaanse Schans in 21 different languages. via likecool #### A Fish With No Eyes What do you call a fish with no eyes? #### A Good Dump Who doesn't love a good dump? h/t Neatorama #### A Journey of Rock 'N' Roll https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjTUKNhoQ58 Anthony Vincent, Ken Tamplin and Gabriela Guncíková take a journey through 65 rock songs, 10 seconds at a time. #### A Letter to Adam Spriggs, Age 18 Dear Adam, Yoo-hoo.  Spriggs.  Hellooo? You can add rows to data extensions using: Imports Queries API With the API, you have a few options -- SOAP being the most complex, AMPscript the simplest: SOAP Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS) AMPscript You can use AMPscript in emails, landing pages or SMS keyword configurations. I'll use AMPscript in this example. Here's how you add or update a single row in a data extension named My_Test_DataExtension using the UpsertDE() function: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/e1003139c7730512fdc0 Here's a breakdown of the UpsertDE() arguments in this example: The name of the data extension to receive the data Number of columns you're using to check to see if there's a matching row already in the data extension. (This means there will be only 1 pair of name and value arguments following this parameter.  You could specify more.) The lookup column The lookup value Column 1 to update Column 1 update value Column 2 to update Column 2 update value For further reading: UpdateDE() AMPscript Functions UpsertData() (for SMS keywords) UpdateData() (for SMS keywords) #### Advanced Google Searches Here's a nice rundown of advanced Google search techniques. Some new ones to me: using a ~ prefix to search for synonyms using .. between two numbers to search within a range using * as a wildcard for multiple characters #### Aidan and His New Arm https://vimeo.com/112131677 #### Airwolf Theme https://sprignaturemoves.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Airwolf-Theme.mp3 #### Alan Adler, Inventor https://vimeo.com/137090060 An interview with Alan Adler, inventor of the AeroPress and the Aerobie. Add this code to a CloudPage in the parent business unit, update the mids array to include the desired values and publish. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/9fc91d091c29bcfad315e38d19f5447e You could also set something like this up in a Script Activity and write the results to a Data Extension for use in another process. NOTE: As leto96 mentioned in the comments, CloudPages are public and should not be considered secure. Anyone with the URL can access it. Initial SSJS development is best done in a CloudPage, where you have a way to debug with output. All of these are done in command mode: shift-v =  select a line ctrl-v = select a rectangle Y = yank selection to buffer P = paste from buffer before cursor p = paste from buffer after cursor position dd = delete a line (this also moves the line to the buffer, so you can still paste it) Here are some other handy ones: u = convert a selection to lowercase u = undo previous action (if nothing is selected) ctrl-R = redo an action gg = go to the top of the document G = go to the end of the document ###gg = go to line number ### :%s/blah/whee/gc = replace "blah" with "whee" globally with confirmation :%r~/whee.txt = insert text into the current document from a file (~ = your home directory) #### Corn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VbZE6YhjKk #### Counts from two tables in one query If you'd like to get the total number of rows in two Data Extensions (or whatever tables) and do it in a single query, you can leverage CROSS JOINs like this: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/c93e7fccfb529d11628a1540d76aae8a Doing it this way will get you past the no-ANSI-JOINs restriction in SFMC. Reference: MSDN - Using Cross Joins #### Coupon Claiming in AMPscript One cool thing you can do in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud is offer your subscribers a unique coupon code as part of a promotional email campaign. Here's how to do it. To start, create a "CouponCodes" Data Extension with the following columns: Next, generate your own list of unique coupon codes in Excel. Include a "CouponCode" column header. Save the worksheet as CSV or Unicode (tab-delimited). Then, import your coupons into the Data Extension with the toolbar import button: Finally, add this AMPscript to your email. This code will try to find a coupon row for the specified email address in the CouponCodes data extension. If it finds one, it'll return the coupon code. If not, it will "claim" an unclaimed code and associate it with the specified email address. The bit about the message context -- that will prevent you from claiming coupon rows when you're doing a Send Preview when building the email. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/04d4e1a7274e03f25d1f Keep these things in mind: Make sure you upload enough coupons for your target audience so you don't run out of unclaimed coupons. For recurring coupon campaigns, you should build a system to monitoring unused coupon codes. Make sure the target of the coupon code (e-commerce site, POS system, etc) is using the same set of coupon codes as your campaign. You can also do this in an SMS campaign. LOL. #### Data Extension Tips & Tricks Here are a few Data Extension (DE) tricks to save you some time: Faster Times Avoid adding fields to DEs at the top or bottom of the hour.   Your data center's server load adversely affects the required back-end update tasks and increase the likelihood of your DE changes timing out. Fewer Drill-downs Duplicate DEs to the root folder and then move them in multiples to the final folder structure.  It saves time if you don't have to drill-down in the folder selector for every DE. Flexible Copy If you need to copy a DE, go through the Create process and choose Create from Existing from the Creation Method selector.  This gives you an opportunity to add/update the fields -- their names, data types, primary key options and default values -- in the copy. Query Studio Create You can create generic data extensions using Query Studio.  Sometimes it's easier to create a DE with a query, copy and update it to suit.  Be sure you reset or remove the 1 day retention in your copy.  This works well with the Create from Existing tip. A hearty tip-of-the-hat to my DEG team for their contributions. #### Davie504's tribute to Avicii https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwWQgzwXbbM Davie504's tribute to Avicii #### Days between T-SQL Dates Suppose you'd like to select subscribers from an Salesforce Marketing Cloud data extension that were created in the last thirty days. Since the platform only stores a business unit-level status for a subscriber if they've been sent an email from the child business unit, the various sources of this status in the platform are not accurate. It wasn't until Salesforce introduced the _BusinessUnitUnsubscribes System Data View in 2019 that there was, in my opinion, an accurate source of truth for this data. Here are my go-to queries to arrive at this data set. I'd suggest scheduling a daily Automation with these queries in the parent business unit. Queries All Subscribers in all business units This query creates a row for every subscriber in every business unit. Since subscribers exist at the enterprise level, they could potentially have a send (or unsubscribe) in any child business unit. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/8f49b1a2d3d3b15e262ce4022f690302 You'll need to update this query to add your own MIDs and business unit names. Unsubscribes per business unit This one sets the status for the subscriber if an explicit unsubscribe in a business unit has been recorded. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/1f5073822feb8f3bc28d80b168c6a5f0 You'll need to update the CASE statement for your own set of MIDs and business unit names. Unsubscribes are the only deliverability status recorded at the business unit level. Caveats Due to the dependencies on the System Data Views, if you have more than a few million subscribers, you'll be hard-pressed to keep these queries running under the 30-minute timeout window. In other words, this solution doesn't scale very well if you have a large subscriber base. All of this assumes that your business units are configured to limit unsubscribes to the business unit level (i.e. The "Subscribers will be unsubscribed from this BU only" option is selected in Setup > Business units > Unsubscribes settings). Uses The business unit subscriber status data is helpful in a few areas in SFMC. Data Integrations If Marketing Cloud is not your database of record for deliverability and status by business unit is a key data point, this can be a good source to extract and load into an external data warehouse. Segmentation You can use this data as a source for suppressing opt-outs so your pre-send counts more accurately reflect actual send counts. Reporting If you have any reporting needs relating to business unit membership and cross-over you can utilize this data source. I don't recommend treating SFMC like a reporting platform, but the flexibility of Query Activities and Data Extensions can't be denied. Further reading Prior to this method, I used tracking extracts as David Devoy describes here on SFSE. Charlie Fay has good article about business unit subscriber status and some details on the SFMC data model Known Issue: New Marketing Cloud Business Units don't have the _BusinessUnitUnsubscribes Data View Available Josh DeBlank has a outlined a WSProxy method for retrieving business unit unsubscribe also. According to Wikipedia: Early Years Nowitzki decided to declare for the 1998 NBA draft. He had a promise from Boston Celtics head coach Rick Pitino that his team would take him with the 10th overall selection. However, one other team was interested in the German prospect: the Dallas Mavericks and they selected him just one pick earlier. Technically, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, but the Bucks were selecting for the Mavericks; the two teams had a pre-arranged deal. The Mavericks had likewise selected Robert "Tractor" Traylor for the Bucks with the sixth pick. Even though the two teams were selecting for each other, the Nowitzki-for-Traylor deal has gone down as one of the most infamous and lopsided trades ever. The Mavericks also got the draft rights to nineteenth-overall pick Pat Garrity, but that same draft, Garrity was traded (along with other players and future draft considerations) to the Phoenix Suns for young point guard Steve Nash. On that night, the Dallas Mavericks acquired the two pieces on which they would build their franchise for years to come. #### Dodge M37 RC model body build https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmDWQCLWmfk&w=650 #### Donkey Kong Stop Motion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UCPNf8A_8s (h/t geekologie) #### Double Trainbow! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lutNECOZFw #### Dr. Paul's Nexus 7 Unboxing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xijcwbg8CGQ Yesss. #### Dr. Pepper Supercut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdBfsLfXjyQ h/t GeekTyrant #### Dr. Robert Zubrin: Why Should We Go To Mars? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2Mu8qfVb5I Dr. Robert Zubrin answers the question: Why Should We Go To Mars? #### Dra-All An old drawing from 1988.  Notice the Stryper-esque "777" at the bottom.  Mmhmm.  That's right. Here's an example that utilizes the AMPscript domain() function and the emailaddr personalization string that's present in every send context. Email #1 - Exclude emails to comcast.net domains with an exclusion script: domain(emailaddr) == "comcast.net" Email #2 - Exclude emails except comcast.net domains with an exclusion script: domain(emailaddr) != "comcast.net" Email #2 would be configured with some throttling or be deployed only at a certain time of day. Code goes here: This solution will work for sends to Lists, Groups or Data Extensions. If Exclusion Scripts are not enabled for your User-Initiated or Triggered Send Definitions, SFMC support can enable them for you. #### Extra Fatal Lady Shimmer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE5xZKszXMQ Love this comment: Finally politics make sense to me. What nobody tells people who are beginners -- and I really wish someone had told this to me...is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it's just not that good. It's trying to be good, it has potential, but it's not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it's normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I've ever met. It's gonna take awhile. It's normal to take awhile. We took them to the lady to make the purchase and she asked if we liked LEGO stuff. Uh-yeah. The Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy musical about a nerdy florist named Seymour Krelborn who discovers a strange and unusual plant. The plant, which he names Audrey Jr. after his co-worker and love interest, Audrey Fulquard, has an insatiable appetite for human blood. At first, Seymour is reluctant to feed Audrey Jr. human blood, but he eventually gives in when he realizes that the plant is making the flower shop a success. Audrey Jr. grows rapidly and becomes a local celebrity, attracting customers and media attention. Seymour's newfound success comes at a price, however. Audrey Jr. demands more and more blood, and Seymour is forced to kill people in order to feed the plant. He also begins to lose control of Audrey Jr., which becomes increasingly aggressive and dangerous. In the end, Seymour is forced to confront Audrey Jr. and destroy it. He saves Audrey from the plant, but he is ultimately consumed by it himself. With this method you can determine which store is closest to each of your subscribers. There are a few bits and pieces about geolocation or geo-targeting in the official SFMC documentation, but I think it's much more helpful to see an example start to finish. Here are the pieces: A subscriber data extension that includes a zip code column A store data extension that includes a zip code column A zip code data extension that includes X, Y, and Z-axis columns A query that writes to a new data extension Store_Customers [table id=1 /] Store_Locations [table id=2 /] Zip_Axis [table id=3 /] The Zip_Axis data above has been limited to those zip codes in the example. I've seen people simply store the latitude and longitude for each zip and then calculate the X, Y, and Z values on the fly in the SQL query. However, I prefer calculating those columns beforehand. The queries will be faster and easier to read. You can do that with a query like this: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/8fe35d69e7acd8174550f3c23ad64c37 Store_Customers_Closest_Store [table id=4 /]You can certainly add more store-related columns to this data extension. For simplicity, I only included a few columns. Geolocation Query This query pulls it all together. The round function and case statements do the dirty work of the calculations between the two zip codes. The ranking and partition part picks out the closest store per subscriber. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/5172d15443483fda425f771abdcfee33 For further reading Data Extensions Query Activities Import Activities Microsoft Transact-SQL (T-SQL) Reference Distances between Zips (for verification) Calculating x, y, z axis values in SQL Updates 2018-09-16 - Reviewed and updated the sample data, tweaked a table names on the query and re-tested it. #### George Hotz's Self-Driving Car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTrgRYa2wbI Get behind the wheel of George Hotz's self-driving car. #### Giannis URL: https://sprignaturemoves.com/giannis/ #### Giannis for MVP https://sprignaturemoves.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/giannis-mvp.mp4 #### Giannis on Joel Embiid https://streamable.com/hfw1e4 This is why I like Giannis. #### Giannis to himself https://sprignaturemoves.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/giannis-to-himself.mp4 (courtesy of Bleacher Report) #### Giannis: Focusing on the Moment https://streamable.com/es9dru #### Giannis: The Finals 50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm76oqiY420 #bucksin6 #### Giant LEGO Star Wars AT-AT Build https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGpj2ToYutQ BrickVault's time lapse build of Peter Brookdale's Giant LEGO Star Wars AT-AT. #### Give it a second. I'm 40! URL: https://sprignaturemoves.com/im-a-man-im-40/ #### I'm a such a sucker for good puns Here are the ten first place winners in the International Pun Contest (supposedly): A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The flight attendant looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger." Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says "Dam!" Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says "I've lost my electron." The other says "Are you sure?" The first replies "Yes, I'm positive." Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said," I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer." A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal." A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and, with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis. Some other funny ones: How about the midget psychic bank robber? The newspaper headline read: Small medium at large. Did you hear about the firefly that flew through the fan? He delighted himself to no end. How about the fly that flew through the screen door? He strained himself. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything." A dyslexic man walks into a bra. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says: "A beer please, and one for the road." An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either. I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel. Two termites walk into a bar. One asks, "Is the bar tender here?" Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?" #### I'm guessing he practices a lot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mgFdn4lfrE #### Ian Atkinson Leather Wallet Build https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mHnZE-8d9o&w=650 Ian Atkinson (Leodis Leather) builds a Horween Shell Cordovan Wallet #### Ice Ice Matrix https://youtu.be/gnEIeVWLtbU Instrumental version here. #### If We Had Some Global Warming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJUFTm6cJXM #### Import Wildcards Based on the Import Activity file specification input box, you may think that only three wildcards are available -- year, month and day: However, in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud Help page for Import Activities, you'll notice that there are more listed: %%Year%% %%Month%% %%Day%% %%Hour%% %%Minute%% %%Second%% So if you need some more granularity in files you're uploading to your SFMC FTP share, yes, you can use minutes and seconds. The issue is that the VersionID is a UniqueIdentifier data type behind the scenes. What if you need more information about those decision splits and messages across channels? Your options are limited to what's in the built-in tracking pages. The _Journey and _JourneyBuilderActivity data views offer some insights on email-related activities, but there's not much beyond that. The Update Contact activity in Journey Builder might just be the go-to solution. You can supplement the base reporting using Update Contact activities to log activity by subscriber as they traverse your journey. NOTE: Once you start writing rows to Data Extensions using Update Contact you might not realize that it doesn't respect the primary keys of your Data Extension. Update Contact will update any row that has a Subscriber Key match, even if the primary key is Subscriber Key plus something else.  There's hope, however -- even with this limitation of the Update Contact activity. Here's a simple solution utilizes an Automation to sweep events to a centralized Journey logging Data Extension. Simply create these two Data Extensions, add one in Contact Builder and then create a Query in an Automation that runs every hour. Journey_Builder_Status Data Extension The Update Contact activity writes to this Data Extension. SubscriberKey, Text (254), Primary Key Journey, Text (100), nullable Event, Text (100), nullable EventDate, Date, nullable, defaulted to the current date It will need to be mapped Subscriber Key to Contact Key in Contact Builder -- one-to-one. Journey_Builder_Log Data Extension This is the final destination of the Journey log data. SubscriberKey, Text (254), Primary Key EventDate, Date, Primary Key Journey, Text (100), nullable Event, Text (100), nullable Journey_Builder_Log Query Activity This sweeps rows from Journey_Builder_Status to Journey_Builder_Log. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/6f3ced751d6c40dc3c3bc0bdb5e327dd Journey_Builder_Log Automation Runs hourly, ends never. Step 1, Query Activity: Journey_Builder_Log Once that's done, drag as many Update Contact Activities that you need to your Journey canvas for recording events. In those activities, specify these field values: Event, EventDate and Journey. This works for tracking entry and exit, depending on where you place the Update Contact activities. #### Judah Levine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkMR5q-R-sM Great Big Story interviews Dr. Judah Levine, NIST Fellow, time-keeper. #### Judy Moonlight https://youtu.be/_zCDvOsdL9Q BLR presents Interrogating Zuckerberg. #### Just Do It - Kid Version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPyRpLnO2QQ Kid Version of Shia LeBeouf's "Just Do It" speech. Being with my son as his counselor was pretty sweet. I was a proud dad -- the whole time. Here's a few things I learned. If you sleep in the air-conditioning with a wet beach towel instead of your sleeping bag, you will get cold at night. I don't care if it's uncool to do all of the crazy actions to the camp songs. You should have seen me getting down on the "Drive the Bus" song. Some of the actions are in the Evolution of Dance video I posted earlier. Yes, 1st and 2nd graders can have a serious discussion about where God came from. However, they may not want your input or like your answers. Kids can actually have too much sugar. Some kids are under too much pressure and responsibility at home. It was really sad hearing about the burdens some of the kids were carrying around. The kids with the biggest mouths are sometimes the biggest wusses. If the boys only knew that someday they might actually like girls, they wouldn't be so dead-set on getting them back based on some rumor. It was boggling how rumors spread like wildfire and how many clandestine plots were hatched to exact revenge on the girls. #### Lessons from Hay Lake Here's a couple of things I a) learned or b) thought a lot about while fishing at Hay Lake in MN last week. A long, hard and even wet day of fishing is better than a good day working. I need to let other people go first more often...and be more generous. Yes, you can get knocked over by a sheep dog. Laughter makes everything fun. I'll always be my mom's little boy, no matter how old I am. Some of the things that I think are really funny, aren't. Not everyone has heard about John Daker and Ask a Ninja A judgmental, nitpicking, legalistic spirit eats at you from the inside. Good things can keep you from the important ones. I really can't sit still. I try but it doesn't work. Don't say you're sorry and then laugh. Here's a rundown of some of them (because I know you are just dying for the details): Columbus "Lumbus" (all black)  -- Lumbus was the first cat I can remember.  My mom said he discovered the kitchen before his eyes were even open.  He turned out to be our oldest cat ever.  It wasn't pretty when he got old and started losing teeth and control of himself.  Mom finally took him to the vet and had him put to sleep. We buried him in the wind-row and marked the spot with a big log. Freckles (calico) -- Freckles was very friendly.  She had quite the motor.  I liked her a lot.  She disappeared one day.  A few weeks later I discovered that she had gotten run over on I-35 near the overpass. Pastel (white with light and dark gray spots) -- Pastel was dad's cat.  She came from a cat named Hooker at the Wichita Historical Museum where my dad use to work (as part of the Oakland Avenue Craftsmen).  She was Dad's shop cat.  She would jump from my dad's workbench into his arms.  And, Pastel would pee in the toilet.  Seriously.  I witnessed it firsthand and, as far as I know, my parents never trained her to do it. Douglas (white with large gray spots) -- Douglas was my all time favorite cat.  He was a rumpy-riser manx.  We got him from a family friend--Benson.  Benson told us his mother and siblings had been killed by a coyote. He was so tiny that we had to feed him milk from a dropper.  He grew up to be huge.  Sadly, he got run over on 87th street.  I vividly remember our neighbor Joanie picking his lifeless body off the dirt road as I watched from my second story bedroom window.   It was pretty devastating for me as a kid. Shrimpy (gray and white tabby) -- Shrimpy was a dimple-rumpy manx.  Mom says he was bigger than Douglas. Toes (orange and white tabby) -- He had extra ones on each foot.   He was a really mean tomcat.  He tore up all of our other cats.  He lived in our hay loft and pooped everywhere.  Every time I saw him I threw something at him.  Rocks, sticks, basketballs, etc. Shorty -- I don't remember a whole lot about Shorty except he was a manx.  Where my parents live it wasn't uncommon to find abandoned cats on the side of the road.  I think Shorty was one of those. Purrky (gray and white tabby) -- I always get Purrky an Doodles mixed up.  One of them was OK and one was really annoying -- like meowing all the time, hanging on the screen door and trying to get in the house all the time.  Both had lots of kittens. Doodles (gray and white tabby) -- see above. Wacko (orange and white tabby) -- I guess Wacko would sleep in the chicken barn on top of a pig at night.   I don't really remember. Pearl (white)  -- Pearl was bright white.  She got some kind of cancer and died a few years ago. Gusto "Gus" (black and gray tabby) -- Gus hated everyone. Buddy (black and white tabby) -- Buddy's shy, and is annoyed by the dog.  When he makes an appearance, he can't resist the cat magnet (your outstretched air-scratching hand). So there you have it. My history with cats.  I'm sure I missed some. #### Medusa Her: He won't even look me in the eye. How about you? #### MNU PIONEERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPS! Wow. MNU started off the game down 0-11 but came back and laid a beat-down on Mayville State, outscoring them 47-29 in the second period. Final score: 78-60. That big banner will look real nice hanging in the Cook Center. Congrats to tournament MVP Adam Hepker. He's probably going to need to sit in the ice tub for a while. I exchanged emails yesterday with David Boyce, the Kansas City Star reporter that's been following the Pioneers. Here's something cool he said: Rocky keeps getting better as a coach. He's put together an amazing NAIA team this year, one that I think is the best in Kansas City. In a tournament at neutral site, I think MidAmerica would come out on top against UMKC, Rockhurst, Park, Avila and William Jewell. Inside? A CR-48 Google Chrome netbook. Little excited?  You bet. Here are a few observations after giving it a work-out. Hardware The CR-48 is just the right size.  It’s very lightweight and sleek.  It feels cool.  The black matte finish shows every greasy fingerprint, but that’s OK. Google took some liberties with the keyboard.  There are no Fn, Home, Delete, PgUp and PgDn keys.  It wasn’t really apparent right out of the box what all of the keyboard shortcuts were.  Here is the best list I found.  Ctrl-Alt-/ is your friend. The clickable touchpad is a real bummer.  Two-finger scrolling is often slow and the sensitivity gets wonky some times.  Right and middle clicking required some Googling to figure out. (Ctrl-Click/Tap is middle click and Alt-Click/Tap is right-click if you’re curious) Other than the touchpad, the only moving part is a small cooling fan.  I’ve only heard it once. This bad-boy boots in under 20 seconds.  There’s no real “shutting down” either.  It‘s more of a log-out-and-go-to-sleep deal. The battery life is amazing.  It will last a full 8 hours of continuous use. There’s a webcam for Google Chat.  There’s also a light sensor that will adjust the screen brightness depending on the ambient light in the room.  Slick. I did hook it up to a large LCD TV and it handled it surprisingly well.  Seemed to be mirror mode only. If you’re wondering about the processor, memory, etc, here’s a good summary of all the technical specs. Software The New Tab window is the desktop.  That’s it.  There are some windows that float up from the bottom of the page.  Other than that, it’s all Chrome tabs and web apps. There is some media browsing functionality.  The media browser window appears as a window from the bottom of the screen when you insert a device or hit Ctrl-O. It allows you to view certain media files in local storage, on some USB flash drives and SD cards.  You can attach or upload files from all of those places. There are two OS update channels available: Beta and Development.  The Development channel is the sandbox for the bleeding-edge new stuff.  It’s pretty slow and unstable and gets updated frequently. The Beta channel is more refined and definitely faster.  It has been updated once since I’ve had the device.  The release included a slew of noticeable improvements. Yes, you can install Ubuntu on the CR-48 and make it into a traditional machine if you want.  It’s complicated but nicely documented by the Chromium folks. Options for doing web development Hitting Ctrl-Alt-T will get you to the limited command-line interface called “crosh”.  From there you can use ssh to connect to another box.  If you’re comfortable coding from command-line with vim or emacs, this will work. However, if you need the brawn of an IDE, some FTP tools, etc, then things get a little more complicated and tedious.  There are some cloud-based IDEs/editors like ShiftEdit, PHPAnywhere.net, and SourceKit that will work…if you can massage your workflow into them. If you need more options, then flipping the developer switch switch is the way to go.  The switch is behind a sticker inside the battery compartment.   Enabling developer mode will provide more unrestricted shell access.  This is the starting point for installing another OS on the machine if you decide to go that route. I did switch to the Chrome OS Development channel and flip the developer switch. I ran it like that for about a week.  Eventually, I restored it back to the Beta channel with an image on a flash drive.  It was just a little too unstable for the simple browsing and note-taking that I was doing. Conclusions The CR-48 is really more like an iPad (minus the touchscreen, plus a keyboard) than it is a traditional netbook. How the ChromeOS works with files in local storage is definitely a work in progress.  The video is mostly slow and choppy.  I don’t see Chrome OS making a lot of mainstream headway until these two things get ironed out. If ChromeOS and Android converge as Google’s Eric Schmidt suggested then I guess I’ll install Ubuntu on it. The CR-48 is a nice and uncomfortably simple device.  It’s made me think a lot about how reliant I am on local storage. I’m still excited and humbled that I even have one of these devices.  Thank you, Google. Some of his over-simplifications bother me sometimes, I must confess. Not this one, however: Either you're focused on maintaining the legacy features or you're focused on figuring out how to replace them. Driving with your eyes on the rearview mirror is difficult indeed. In a world of little competition, legacy features are something worth keeping. No sense alienating loyal customers. But we don't live in a world of little competition. The faster your industry moves, the more likely others are willing to live without the legacy stuff and create a solution that's going to eclipse what you've got, legacies and all. I guess I'm just at that point in my life. If it's not working, stop doing it and create something new. Doing that with the SFMC Web Services can be a pain. One alternative is to utilize Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS) and a Landing Page. I built a landing page that posts to itself and runs this pruneRows() function. I configured a Data Extension that contains the keys to delete. The script retrieves all of the rows with that key, deletes them and updates the DE of keys with the results. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/a8e565c3cb27cbd321f7 You may have to experiment with the number of Row Keys to retrieve at a time. If the number is too high, the landing page will time-out. In my scenario, I found that processing 50 at a time worked well (line #8). One of the drawbacks of using the AMPscript reference blocks for sharing content across email definitions is that, while the actual changes are done in only a few places, getting the actual send definitions updated requires an additional step -- republishing. This goes for Journey emails, also. Here's a script that I wrote to automate pausing, publishing and starting Triggered Send Definitions (TSD) by folder. It'll recursively traverse the folder structure if you have a bunch of nested folders. Results of the process are logged in a Data Extension. To get started, create a Data Extension with this schema: Name: republish_trigger_log External Key: republish_trigger_log https://gist.github.com/wvpv/f0b0cfc441129cc76ed062bb6b546e28 Here's the script -- just update line 10 with the parent folder's Category ID. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/fe5c23e53f99ef5f3c9032483894f4d4 This script starts at the CategoryID specified on line 10 and loops down through all of the child folders. NOTE: You can find the Category ID by inspecting the URL at the bottom of your browser when you hover over the folder in SFMC. When it encounters and "Active" Triggered Send Definition, it pauses, publishes and starts it. Results of those three actions are recorded in republish_trigger_log. I recommend running this Script Activity in an unscheduled Automation. #### Red Wing Shoes https://vimeo.com/106439719 Cool Hunting showcases Red Wing Shoes in Red Wing, MN. #### Reggie Watts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdHK_r9RXTc #### Regular Expressions in AMPScript Did you know you can use regular expressions in AMPscript? (h/t swissmiss) #### Retrieving and Starting an Automation with SSJS Server-side Script (SSJS) Activities are a hidden gem of the Salesforce Marketing Cloud. They're useful for a wide range of applications. I ran into a scenario where I wanted to run an Automation programmatically -- if it's not already running. It was way harder than it needed to be. Hope this saves you some frustration: https://gist.github.com/a268a989daf0867bc028 The retrieve is for getting the ObjectID and Status of the Automation, which you then use to check to see if it's running and then invoke a Perform if it isn't. The frustrating part of this was that the ObjectID is not a retrievable property of the Automation Object (unlike Status). It's only returned in the result-set of a successful Retrieve. I'd suggest testing this script in a CloudPage until you get it working and then move it to the Script Activity. For further reading: Accessing API Functions Using the Function Object SFMC API Objects Automation Object #### Retrieving and Storing Aggregated Send Data One of the great things about the WSProxy library for Server-Side JavaScript in Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC) is that it has reinvigorated the use of SOAP API objects in the platform. SOAP objects are still foundational to understanding the SFMC data model. Here's one of my favorite applications of WSProxy -- retrieving and storing aggregated Send data in a Data Extension using a Script Activity. (BTW, check out what's available -- it's everything in the Recent Email Sending Summary Report, plus some more details.) Simply create a Script Activity in Automation Studio like this. Before the first run, update the TargetDECustomerKey and TargetDECategoryID values for your preferred Data Extension and folder. I generally use Send for the Data Extension name and customer key. As noted in the script, you can comment out Data Extension creation part after the first run. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/9510408dc6ae265bc378679e9430234f This script sets a filter (it's like a where-clause in SQL), iterates through the Send Object results, and upserts them into the specified Data Eextension. If you don't want to retrieve all sends every time, you can uncomment the filter criteria and get more specific. I've generally not restricted it by date, because it's not that much data to retrieve. Finally, schedule this to run on an interval appropriate for your needs. At least daily is good. Once you have data, you can toolbar-download it as needed, query it, export it with an Extract Activity, or lookup and display it in an email or CloudPage with AMPscript. #### Retrieving and Storing Aggregated Triggered Send Data Here's another one of my favorite applications of WSProxy -- retrieving and storing aggregated TriggeredSendSummary data in a Data Extension using a Script Activity. This data is helpful in that it shows aggregated send data for all Triggered Sends -- traditional and Journey Builder ones.  A new row is added every time a Triggered Send Definition is published, so it's also a historical record of publishing events -- along with the performance of each "version" of the Triggered Send Definition.  The sum of each of the activity counts represents what you would see in Tracking for a particular Triggered Send Definition. One nice benefit is that the results also contain the number of emails queued to be sent at a specific point in time.  So if you retrieve this data hourly (with some additional configuration), you could monitor the sending queue over time. (If you're looking for something like this for TXM Email sends, you're stuck with the queue metrics endpoint and aggregating the activity yourself.) To get started, create a Data Extension with this schema: Name: TriggeredSendSummary External Key: TriggeredSendSummary https://gist.github.com/wvpv/5ffbfd2c7ffb70f97369b268ac4618fa Next, create a Script Activity in Automation Studio like this. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/e3f36971b186ba5a6d3038a6e806351b This script does a Describe of a couple of SOAP objects to get the retrievable properties, sets a filter (it's like a where-clause in SQL), iterates through the TriggeredSendSummary Object results, does a few more related retrieves for specific attribute, and finally upserts the results into the specified data extension. If you don't want to retrieve all records every time, you can update the filter criteria on line 81 and get more specific. I've generally not restricted it, because it's not that much data to retrieve. Finally, schedule this to run on an interval appropriate for your needs. Once you have data, you can toolbar-download it as needed, query it, export it with an Extract Activity, or lookup and display it in an email or CloudPage with AMPscript. #### Revisiting Comic Sans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUCcObwIsOs Type means more than words. Hard bounces, soft bounces, held status, unsubscribed, undeliverable -- what do these really mean? First of all, it means that subscriber statuses are not simply active or unsubscribed, which is sometimes difficult to explain to marketers -- especially when they are scrutinizing subscriber reporting and statistics. There are a couple of pages that on the Salesforce Marketing Cloud help site that outline their bounce management process. The one that I've found most helpful is this one: Keep in mind that there are different kinds of unsubscribes: list unsubscribe master unsubscribe global unsubscribe Here is more info on that. #### Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engineer Skills I've spent a fair amount of time thinking about the skill progression/path for someone who's doing engineering work in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud platform. This obviously doesn't apply to everyone working in the platform, but for those of you doing this kind of work in agencies, I think it can be a helpful guide for taking the next step. Certification tests have their place for sure, but these are what I've found to be the practical benchmarks. Recruiters, hiring managers: this is what people like me do in Marketing Cloud. I recently had this request from a client: Display a random set 6 of the products in a specific data extension in the body of this email. That's tricky with AMPscript since you can only retrieve ordered rows based on fields and values already in the data extension (e.g you can't order by GUID(), random() or _customObjectKey with the lookup functions). There are also no arrays or sorting outside of the rowset lookup functions in AMPscript. Here's a solution that worked for me: DataExtensionTest [table id=11 /] (NOTE: I added a lookupKey column to my data extension with a default value to facilitate retrieving all of the rows) https://gist.github.com/wvpv/f60e8d9abbfb34349d7db3930505759c Output 1 arr(1): {2}{6}{7}{4}{8}{3}{5}{1} arr(2): 5497|7014|8225|5767|9496|7114|5152|8473 subscriberkey1: 5497, firstName: Suzy subscriberkey2: 7014, firstName: Nora subscriberkey3: 8225, firstName: Leon subscriberkey4: 5767, firstName: Barb subscriberkey5: 9496, firstName: Lily subscriberkey6: 7114, firstName: Dale subscriberkey7: 5152, firstName: Curt subscriberkey8: 8473, firstName: Doug Output2 arr(1): {7}{3}{5}{6}{8}{1}{2}{4} arr(2): 8225|7114|5152|7014|9496|8473|5497|5767 subscriberkey1: 8225, firstName: Leon subscriberkey2: 7114, firstName: Dale subscriberkey3: 5152, firstName: Curt subscriberkey4: 7014, firstName: Nora subscriberkey5: 9496, firstName: Lily subscriberkey6: 8473, firstName: Doug subscriberkey7: 5497, firstName: Suzy subscriberkey8: 5767, firstName: Barb I'm sure there are other ways of approaching this. There is, however, a personalization string called _DataSourceName, outlined on the Data About the Recipient section of the Personalization Strings page in the documentation. If you'd like to record this data, you can simply add an AMPscript variable in your email or template and set it to _DataSourceName. If your Send Log Data Extension has a column matching the variable name, it'll get recorded for all of your sends. (Fields that start with an underscore aren't allowed in Data Extensions, so you can't just name it the same as the personalization string in order to record it.) Here's how it played out last night, while out shopping at Target with my family: I was walking down one of the food aisles looking for some Cracker Jacks to take to camp this week. A guy walked around the corner and I looked at his shirt. Lo and behold it's a really cool Bucks shirt. As I was standing there stunned in amazement, my wife blurts out, "Excuse me, are you a Bucks fan?" They guys says, "Naah, I'm just a basketball fan." Smiling, I said something like , "C'mon, tell me you're a Bucks fan. I mean there's not many of us around and they need all the help we can get. I went to a T'wolves vs Bucks game over Christmas and I met the other three Bucks fans. It'd be nice to know there's another one around." He says, "Now if they came to Kansas City, then I'd definitely be a fan." I like his attitude. Questions like: How do support cases that identify defects arrive on the official Known Issues page? What communication about these defects can be expected to agencies or customers that identify them? How and when do issues progress through the status chronology: In Review > Scheduled > Release In Progress > Fixed or No Fix How seriously does SFMC take "this issue affects me" votes by the community?  Is there a golden threshold that qualifies an issue for fixing? Can known issues fall off the list? Let's pull back the curtain a little and look at some of the data, shall we? The Known Issues page happens to have an RSS feed by Status (In Review, Scheduled, Release In Progress, Fixed, No Fix) and by Tag.  For example, here's the RSS feed for Email Studio.  I did a little experimenting and discovered that issues_index_rss page will accept multiple parameters.  Combine those together and you can produce an RSS feed for Email Studio, No Fix items, for example. Why not create a feed for all of the Marketing Cloud tag and status combinations?   Or better yet, how about an OPML file containing all of these feeds? Done. You can simply import this OPML file I built into your RSS reader and get notified when new entries are published: (If you haven't dipped your toe into RSS reader-land, here's a good list of the players. I started with Google Reader (RIP), but I ended up hosting my own tt-rss installation.) Seeing the new issues via RSS is nice, but there's no good way to find issues by tag and status on the official page. I set up a process on my site to pull all of the RSS data every hour, parse it, and then write it to a database table. Results are displayed here: SFMC Known Issues You should be able to search, filter, and sort by column. There's a summary of the rows by tag at the bottom, for some perspective. Does this resonate with you? How can Salesforce help with this? Edit 2020-06-21:  In a prior version of this post, I mentioned the 2019 Data Extension Row Count kerfluffle.  It was originally posted in IdeaExchange and it wasn't ever a "known issue" -- as in posted in Known Issues.  However, this event, in particular, showed the power of the greater Marketing Cloud community rallying around an issue until it was resolved in a patch release.  The day that was fixed was a good day, wasn't it? #### Some Things I Learned in 2010 Plumbing is not for me Growing spiritually doesn't happen outside of community Forgiving and forgetting isn't easy, but it's necessary.  It's a sad state of affairs when you let someone from your past dictate your present demeanor. If you're wondering why my taskbar is dark gray, I'm using the Zune theme for Windows XP. ®= right-click, © = click, © © = double-click 1. ® on an empty place on the taskbar, © Properties 2. © Customize next to the "Hide inactive icons" checkbox 3. Note the Behavior column 4. Next to each "Hide when inactive" entry change it to "Always Hide" 5. © OK twice and you're done. Voila. Nice, huh? #### Spriglet #11 - Restore off-screen programs in Windows Have you ever had a program show in the taskbar as running, but not show anywhere on the screen? (I've only had it happen in a dual-screen environment, but I suppose it could happen with a single screen.) Anyway. Alt-Space is your friend. Hit Alt-space, choose Move and then use the arrow keys to move the window back to the visible screen. #### Spriglet #12 - Merging PDFs in Windows OK, so I have PDFs of several receipts that I need to fax into my health insurance company for flexible spending reimbursement.  The Windows Fax "printer" doesn't allow me to string together multiple files, so I'm in a pickle. I don't have Adobe Acrobat, so I start Googling with "(combine|merge) (pdf|pdfs) -mac -apple -purchase -demo -trial -shareware -acrobat" I find pdfsam, download & install it, add my PDFs, set the output file, click Run and, bam, a merged PDF.  Sweet. I tried another option as well -- pdftk.  If you'd rather go the commandline route, this'll work just as good. #### Spriglet #13 - Posterize a photo in Adobe Fireworks Adobe Photoshop has a nice posterize command built-in. Not so in Fireworks. I searched high and low for a nice way to do it. In desperation I posted an entry on the official Adobe Fireworks message board and Ilya Razmanov was posted exactly what I needed. Here's the steps with pictures to illustrate his technique: 1. Open a cool photo in Fireworks (Yes, Ray Allen is cool, if you didn't already know). 2. Add this effect: Adjust Color -> Levels 3. Set the max value in Output Level to 4 4. Add another effect: Add this effect: Adjust Color -> Levels. This time set the max Input Level to 4 6. Voila! Here's what you get. You can tweak the levels on both sides to get the amount of posterization you want. #### Spriglet #15: Encoding video that will play in Microsoft PowerPoint PowerPoint (PPT) often gets a bad rap when it comes to video. Here's a little tutorial on how to convert a video so it will play embedded in a PPT presentation. 1. First and foremost, PPT will only play video that mplay32.exe (Windows Media Player 5) will play.  If you want to test a video to see if it will work in PPT, click Start -> Run -> mplay32.exe.  Open your video and click the play button.  If you get an error, then it won't work in PPT.  Here's a good site with more information about video in PPT. 2. So you have a video that won't play in mplay32.exe.  You need to convert it.  Enter the Open Source MediaCoder. You can download it here. 3. Install and fire up MediaCoder.  Click the Add button.  Click Add File, browse to the video file and click Open. 4. Click Video tab on the left side of the bottom pane. 5. In the Mode drop-down box, choose "Bitrate-based".  Change the bitrate to 1500. 6. Set the Format and Container both to MPEG1 7. Click the Start button.  Wait until it finishes. 8. Open it in mplay32.exe and click the Play button.  If it plays, it'll work in PPT. 9. Start PPT and insert the video by clicking Insert -> Movies and Sounds -> Movie from File. 10. Click the Automatically button so it plays when you visit the slide.  Resize the video box as needed.  If the video is in 16x9 format, you may need to set the background to black.  Start your presentation.  Voilà. #### Spriglet #16: Simple HTML signatures in Gmail Create your signature in HTML in a text file named temp.html.  Here's mine: Adam Spriggs // sprignaturemoves.com // twitter.com/wvpv // 816-555-1212 "what others do with talent, I do with obstinate fixation" Open temp.html in your browser -- in another window Enable Labs in Gmail Enable the Canned Response feature Compose a new email Highlight your signature in the other browser window Drag it into the body of your e-mail In the Canned responses drop-down, choose new canned response. Haven't locked them inside it since. #### Spriglet #4: Windshield Wiper Rotation If you've ever seen my car, you'd know that it's not something that I obsess over at all.   In fact quite the contrary -- I don't care about it that much.   It gets me from here to there.   It's not pretty but it's functional. I try to invest in it as little as possible.   There's more important things to spend money on, IMO. So, anyway...I found a way to make my windshield wipers last longer than recommended (every 6 months).   When they start skidding across the windshield, I stop (usually at the gas station) and take them off and 1) switch the right and the left and 2) flip them over so that the end that's on the top is now on the bottom. Turning off your car when the wiper blades are upright makes them a little easier to change. Worked like a champ in the torrential downpour on the way to work this morning.   Voila!   No skidding. #### Spriglet #5: Clear the Print Spool in Windows XP By Force Spriglet #5: Have a print job in Windows that just won't go away? I think it's important to ensure all of the rows in the file got imported or have some recourse to identify exceptions -- outside of accessing the results file that gets dropped in the SFTP Import folder or relying on the import results email. Here's a script that retrieves and iterates through the ImportResultsSummary SOAP object data (via WSProxy) and writes it to a Data Extension of the same name. NOTE: The DestinationIDis either a ListID or the ObjectID of a Data Extension. If you've got an inventory of DataExtension SOAP object data, you can use something like this dataset to build a pretty comprehensive report on import exceptions. I started setting proper Customer/External Keys on all Import Activities after using this data, just so ImportDefinitionCustomerKey is meaningful. One less thing to have to track down when troubleshooting. Of course, I welcome any feedback y'all might have on this. You can supplement your audit scheme by retrieving these Audit Events via REST and writing them to a Data Extension (DE). First, you'll need to enable the feature here: Email Studio > Admin > Security Settings > Enable Audit Trail Data Collection > Yes After you've collected data for a few days, create a Script Activity like this and set it to run on the desired interval in an Automation. You'll need to add your target Data Extension's Category ID, MID, REST API Tenant, Client Id and Client Secret. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/fc7309c7fc5a3456bd0760e50d1d4e28 #### Streak h/t reddit #### Street Drummer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqJdzYY_Fas #### Street Organ Thunderstruck https://youtu.be/_2EK1YHWplE via kojikojimoheji.com/ #### Strider (h/t geek-art) #### Stripping Times from T-SQL Dates When you're writing queries in Salesforce Marketing Cloud sometimes it's helpful to truncate the time from date columns -- like when you want to compare two date columns, one with a time and one without. You can strip the time off of both to make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Here's an example: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/32c1c75b034bf8414320cd0e60dcc377 The first column returns the full date and time, the second column cast strips the time portion. I borrowed the department Asus Eee Pc 900 for the trip. It had CrunchBang Linux on it, which wouldn't update anymore. I reformatted it with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition in about 45 minutes. Everything worked with the base install.  Sweet. On my Dell Inspirion lappy running Ubuntu 10.04, I installed and tried several DVD ripping utilities.  I settled on Thoggen which was much simpler than the others.  I ripped several DVDs into .ogv format, copied them to the netbook with my 2GB USB flash drive.  Boom. Then I installed VLC on the netbook to play them.  "F" for full-screen mode is your friend.  Awesome. The default screen saver and power management settings were not conducive to watching a 2-hour video.  I found Caffeine, which allowed me to override the power management settings for a specific period.  Perfect. Not long after we got on the road, I noticed my wife's iPod Nano is missing all of its playlists.  GTKPod to the rescue.  I plugged in the iPod, specified the model, mounted it, re-created a few playlists, and wrote them right back to the iPod. All without iTunes.  Easy-peasy. #### Sweet satisfaction https://sprignaturemoves.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/making-things-right.mp4   Some things just can't go unaddressed. It's especially appropriate for email. Find what works best and go with it. One way to go about that is to segment your sending audience into groups and send varying content to each group. In the Salesforce Marketing Cloud platform, you can create those groups with queries. Here's an example of a 20-20-80 split -- two groups of 20% and the rest in the last group. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/55641d0b258789040fd880dd19e7a8ad (Select the first 20% randomly) https://gist.github.com/wvpv/437fd06643695227539995aa1731087d (select 25% more of those not already selected in the first group) https://gist.github.com/wvpv/c991a4e1e8491f73d24db7d49c3c4d7b (select the rest of the rows that are not in either of the first two groups) You may be wondering if the second query is correct -- 25% is not 20%. Here's the math: If you have a 100 subscribers and you subtract 20% -- or 20 -- you have 80 left. If we want two equal groups of 20, then 20% of 80 is not 20, it's 16. To get the correct count by percentage we'll need to use 25% to get 20 from 80, since 80 * .25 = 20. Also, ordering by NewID() will randomize the selection each run of the query. It's like a monstrous Bluetooth headset sticking out of your ear as you walk around the grocery store talking to someone. It's generally rude and obnoxious behavior that we tend to poke fun of, don't we? Talking to your devices seems great -- for those types that called their own pagers in a crowd of people back in the day. Is that really the future of our devices? EDIT: So I admit there's a huge benefit to being hands-free with your devices.  No doubt.  I'm just curious as to how that will/should play out in our social interactions. #### Tatsuru Rai https://vimeo.com/105552572 Tatsuru Rai demonstrates his craft, making soba. #### Teens React to 80's Fashion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdOYTisTsw8&w=650 via Tastefully Offensive - Teen's React to 80's Fashion Who pronounces Zubaz like "tubas"? I need to find the right technique for that unhittable shot that my brother-in-law kept laying on me. Out of all of the Wii Sports, bowling got the most action. My kids spent a lot of time fishing and blasting everything that moved in the shooting game. The Cow Race is cool and funny, but got old after a while. I couldn't get anyone to really play the tank game with me. I thought it was fun. Now that I'm home I've set up the wireless features. Pretty sweet. Did the first update. I was a little surprised how long it took. 1/2 UPDATE: Finally got up to Pro status in Tennis. It's much harder now. There's little doubt that Amazon's core competency is selling. A free paid app every day deal is absolutely going get a lot of Amazon Android apps on Android phones.  Amazon has just inserted themselves as a major player in the Android app marketplace. The installation of the Amazon App Store app was a little on the complicated side, but once it's pants were on, it made gold records. MP3 purchases from Amazon don't count toward in your cloud drive space.  Brilliant. The whole 20G of space for free for a year when you purchase an MP3 album is killer smart.  Totally impressed.  I'll probably buy it when my year is up. The Cloud Player MP3 upload tool is pretty slick and is chugging right along on my computer at home. Weak playlist creation the Cloud Player is my only gripe so far.   I like to create my playlists by Artist.  I have to add them to playlists one by one, which is kind of a pain.  A little drag -n-drop action would be sweet. The Cloud Player works well on my Google CR-48.  That thing needs a win right now.  More about that later. Love the Cloud Player integration with my Android phone.  Finally a decently priced (free) stream of my own music without having to sync my phone and my computer. If they every develop a cross-platform Cloud Drive desktop synchronization tool, they could give Dropbox (affiliate link) a run for their money. How about you? #### Timezones in SFMC Dates/times displayed in the Marketing Cloud interface are adjusted based on the logged-in user's timezone. The same display adjustment applies to any scheduling configured in Automations or Journeys. However, dates and times in Marketing Cloud are stored UTC-6 (Central Standard Time with no daylight savings). System data views and tracking data are all stored in this timezone. You should always assume that "Today" and "Now" are UTC-6. The query engine in SFMC does support timezone adjustments using the AT TIME ZONE directive. So if you need to adjust UTC-6 timestamps, this is a good place to start. If you need to accommodate subscriber-specific timezones for sends, you'll need a "home" timezone or offset for each subscriber and a timezone offset reference data source. Naveen VM has outlined a good end-to-end example. The only outlier (as far as I know) is Personalization Builder/Einstein Recommendations. Those dates are displayed and recorded in UTC-0. What next? SFMC Support can certainly tell you exactly what the error was, and now you can see some error details in the Activity tab of Automation Studio. Here are a few common things that cause Query Activities to fail. Primary key violation If your query results in duplicate rows not allowed by the primary key, then you'll need to change your primary key or de-duplicate the rows that result from your query. Here's my go-to method for deduplication. The innermost query sorts by insertDate, groups by subscriber key and assigns a ranking to each row. The outermost query selects only the oldest result per subscriber key. https://gist.github.com/wvpv/8678ea474e0d87e6adacf8ecd17e1aee Inserting a null value into a non-nullable field If you have fields in your target Data Extension that are non-nullable, you need to ensure none of the columns in your query return a null value. You can utilize the isnull() SQL function to handle that situation: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/c1714454430c5c275ebcf694d12f134d Inserting a value too long for the field (truncation) If any of your source data extension columns are larger than the target, then you can adjust the length of the target column or use the left() SQL function to trim the value: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/b409c8768882feff64ca3e18578bdeb4 Timeout Probably the most frustrating error is the the 30 minute timeout. If your query won't run in that amount of time, then it'll error out. There are a bunch of different ways to address query timeouts. Here are some tips: First and foremost, you need to reduce the number of row you're querying. This can be altering your date range or adding additional criteria to target rows more specifically. Leverage the primary keys for speed.  While we don't have any insight in to the indexes that SFMC behind the scenes, it's a good bet the primary keys are indexes.  So the more utilize their values in the where-clause, the better. Don't join multiple System Data Views in your query.  It's a pain, but it's a good practice to have a separate query for each activity (sends, opens, clicks, etc.).  Last resort is to make your own copies of the System Data Views with primary keys and refresh them on an interval.  The data extension versions will perform better. Make sure your where-clause conditionals are sargable to reduce the number of type-conversions and to optimize the selection: https://gist.github.com/wvpv/8db55db35239cea0870347b86d590661 If it's still timing out, leave a comment below with some details. I have some other tricks to share. Target Data Extension has been deleted Easy fix for this one. Just re-select the target data extension in your Query Definition. Data-type mismatch You can't, for example, insert a string value of $12.34 into a Decimal field. What I typically do in this scenario is to check the data types of the source data extension(s) and ensure that they match the target data extension column data types. If they don't, then I'll either recreate the target column with the correct data type or cast/convert/fix the source column value in the query. #### Trucker's Hitch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUHgGK-tImY&w=650 by Ylvis #### Truncate a decimal with AMPscript If you ever need to truncate a decimal value instead of rounding it, give this a try: Code https://gist.github.com/wvpv/0db9f20af37945e9dee84e647b148139 Output num1: 12.99 num1_rounded: 13 num1_formatted: 12 Try it yourself: https://mcsnippets.herokuapp.com/s/gQhFesBi #### Trusting the Press https://youtu.be/PiR6BgbyHOs #### Tuxy URL: https://sprignaturemoves.com/tuxy/ #### TV URL: https://sprignaturemoves.com/tv/ #### Two Swishes from Onuaku Onuaku swishes two underhanded free-throws. It was just down the street from our hotel. The plan was to spend the whole day there. That's what we did. We pretty much saw and did everything we could. A few highlights: Mission Status Center This started with the Blast-Off Theatre and then moved into an impressive array of screens, monitors and live feeds. The guide in this area was very knowledgeable about what exactly was going on with NASA, like, right then. Since there were astronauts actually in space when we were there, it was especially interesting. She talked in certain terms about returning to space and the upcoming goals and timelines for NASA expeditions. It was fascinating. Historic Mission Control Center This was the mission control center that was used from 1964 until 1998. The Apollo missions, including the Apollo 7 and 13, and several Shuttle missions were all controlled here. Saturn V Complex This is particular building held the Saturn V rocket used in many of the Apollo missions. Huge is an understatement. The rocket itself was nearly as long as a football field. Toward the top you can walk in-between the last booster stage. It was amazingly complex for being so old. Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory This particular facility was a 15 minute charter bus trip away. It's as close as the astronauts get to the extended weightlessness of space. It's a pool that's 202 feet wide, 102 feet across and 40 feet deep. I was a little disappointed that we couldn't get down closer and see inside. You can see the viewing area on the other side of the pool from this Wikipedia panorama shot. Here's the other pictures I took. #### TX Vacation 2008 - Lakewood Church and Galveston photo by mlsnp When deciding where to go to church on vacation, we thought we'd dip our toe in to water of a mega-church. The closest one to where we were: Lakewood, where Joel Osteen is pastor. Since it is such a huge church and because it was mostly out of curiosity that we were even going, Rachel and I discussed whether or not it was appropriate to bring our camera. I opted just to snap a few discrete shots with my phone. Once we found the parking garage, we took a shuttle to the arena/sanctuary. We were greeted with a firm handshake and a "Welcome to Lakewood." Right inside the front doors and up the escalator was a huge bookstore and what was apparently the mission statement of the church emblazoned on the wall. For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. -- Jeremiah 29:11 Seemed quite obvious based on everything we'd seen so far that this verse was a central to everything at Lakewood.  Osteen's book, Become a Better You, was on display in several places around the sanctuary. We looked around a bit and headed over to the help desk. They pointed us in the direction of the floor where they had children's church. The children's ministry was divided up between two different floors. The check-in process was impressive. You can't tell very well from this picture. Each kid filled out a card that was immediately entered into a database at one of the eight check-in kiosks. We got 3 stickers -- one for each of the kids and one for us parents. We had to present the parent sticker when we picked up the kids. Rachel and I headed for the sanctuary. Most all of the "good seats" were already filled. We ended up in the upper level stage right section, right next to the platform. Here's a good shot (that I didn't take) of all the whole sanctuary. The service started out real nice. The music and band sounded amazing considering where we were sitting.  There was a choir on both sides and up from the platform. The band was behind, but in front of the golden spinning globe. The worship team had about 8 vocalists. Once the band was done, the whole platform the band was on sunk into the floor and all of the musicians walked out into a lower level. That was pretty slick. It pretty much went downhill from there, IMO. Osteen's wife and "co-pastor" got up and did a little sermonette after one of the songs. Ugh. She had another little spiel before the offering.  The word "offering" is apparently very clappable. I wish I could find the sermon that Osteen preached online somewhere, so I could post it here for you to have a listen.  Nearly all of the verses were taken out of context. It was basically a steady stream of God's blessings on your life, prosperity, destiny, just believe it, free will, nothing is impossible, ad nauseam. We picked up the kids with our sticker and headed back to the shuttle and then to our car. We quizzed the kids about their worship experience. Something about Peter. I'm so disgusted just pondering it all again, that I'm not even going to write about the altar call, and my thoughts about whether Osteen is a Chuck-E-Cheese robot or a real person. If I find that sermon, I'll post it. We ate lunch at the Goode Company Hamburgers and Taqueria which was pretty close to the church. We got there when they were still serving breakfast. I ate a fajita dish. It was pretty good. It just happened to be right across the street from the Houston's that I ate at while attending Nazarene Youth Congress in Houston in 2003. After lunch we headed back to the hotel, changed clothes and hit the road for Galveston. Not only was there construction on the road, but everyone from the whole United States of America was heading there for Spring Break. It really wasn't that far from the hotel, but it ended up taking almost 2 hours to get there. Once there it was cold, very windy and frankly, not that great. The highlight probably was the dead jellyfish on the beach. Caleb had fun poking it with a stick. I think I'd rather visit a tropical beach next time -- one with out the Spring Break, my stereo / car / girlfriend / motorcycle / six-pack-is-better-than-yours morons. #### U Can't Touch This (Without Music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLUYnMPaiJw U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer -- without music. #### Ugmonk Ampersand Table https://vimeo.com/47603102 #### Ultimate Harmonica Jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqvnIalGgBk #### UPDATED: For the hard drive click, freezing does the trick Came home last night to find my external hard drive unresponsive. It was making the dreaded clicking sound. I used it primarily for backups, but there were still a few important files on it -- archived Media Center videos, MP3s and some pictures. I had read about people freezing their hard drives as a way to restore them temporarily.  I decided it give it a try. I stuck it in a ZipLoc freezer bag and placed it on top of the Minnesota corn in the Cool-Whip container in my deep freeze. After about an hour, I took it out and hooked it up. No change.  I stuck it back in the bag and put it back in the freezer. So I get it out this morning and hook it up. Click. Click. Click. Whirrrrr. Click. Click. Sigh. Then surprisingly, I heard this. Boom, it was back. I frantically copied off about 3 GB of data. Not a hitch. Couldn't believe it. EDIT: This method does not work on newer hard drives with hydro dynamic bearings. It also does not work for all types of hard drive failures. #### Updated:The Miracle in Mississippi In case you haven't seen this yet. The message board is not a good place to view my personal best scores. I'd like to see a table of all Miis on the console and their best scores in each sport. A way to turn off the strap warnings and things that slow the game down. I know they're necessary, but once my Mii has acknowledged them, don't show them again. It would be cool if some functionality could be unlocked when you get to a certain skill level in all of the sports. I know bowling pros get a different color ball, but what about the other sports? Tennis - when you're not playing against the computer, there are some unhittable service returns. It's not quite fair. Baseball It'd be sweet to pick the players on our team from our pool of Miis. I know the minimalist nature of Wii Sports is what makes it cool, but some more action on the baseball players would be nice, especially fielding. For example, if you hit a line drive to first base, the fielder should step on the base. It'd also be cool to be able to position yourself in the batter's box. Golf - If there's one of the sports that a movement that is counter-intuitive, it's golf. Maybe it's that I don't like golf in general. #### What's Up? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NXnxTNIWkc What's Up? by 4 Non Blondes, 1992 #### Whatever I feel like I wanna do. Gosh! It is a practice intended to give the statements or organizations credibility by withholding information about the source's financial connection. The term astroturfing is derived from AstroTurf, a brand of synthetic carpeting designed to resemble natural grass, as a play on the word "grassroots." The implication behind the use of the term is that there are no "true" or "natural" grassroots, but rather "fake" or "artificial" support, although some astroturfing operatives defend the practice. Table of Contents 1. Interactions 8. Technology & The Internet 2. Cars 9. Business 3. Money 10. Craftsmanship 4. Food & Drink 11. Religion & Politics 5. Animals 12. Inner Life 6. Sports 13. Perspective 7. Learning 14. Tools 1. Interactions No one cares about your welfare more than your parents. They've been carrying the responsibility burden for you longer than anyone else. If the people around you always tell you "yes" and never "no" then they don't truly care about you. Refrain from gifting what the recipient collects as a hobby -- unless you collect it, too. Get good at asking open-ended questions and leaning in to listen. It's a good way to get to know someone. Be content letting other people notice your skills and effort. Your actions can speak for themselves. When you know you did something amazing, smile, high-five yourself, and leave it at that. Communication is not just words on a page or screen. It includes your actions, tone of voice, and facial expressions, too. If you don't verbalize your expectations, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Boasting about your virtuous deeds puts your priorities and motives in question. Those announcements negate most of the goodness in the results. Mark Twain once said, "Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference." First to complain is the first volunteer. 2. Cars Do the total cost of ownership math on your vehicle. The best cars are usually the ones that get good gas mileage. Invest in some floor mats that catch dirt. Three essential car skills: Changing oil, replacing a flat tire with the spare, and using the parking brake to do a doughnut in the snow. Paying attention is the most important rule of driving. The fast lane is never faster during rush hour. Generally speaking, people who treat it that way are the ones that make it worse. 3. Money Resist the impulse to buy something to just make yourself feel better. It rarely works. Let purchasing decisions simmer. Don't give in to any pressure to make a decision right now. Be wary of those constantly trying to sell you something or those that don't value you as an individual capable of managing your own life. Know that your attention, your sense of belonging, or fear of missing out are direct lines to your bank account. You're a slave to your debtors. Pay off your debts as soon as you can. 4. Food & Drink Red potatoes are the best potatoes. Stew is always better on the second day. You should probably drink some more water. There's always room for dessert. To quote Michael Scott in The Office, "The only thing that would make this day any better is ice cream." 5. Animals Hunting fish in a boat is more fun than waiting for a fish to find your bait. There's something about putting your ear up to a purring cat. Pet names that end with a "y" are boring. Cats are better than dogs because of where they poop. 6. Sports Good free throw shooters are good basketball players. Golf is only fun if you have a golf cart and the course is empty. The best athletes celebrate success with the team first. Vince Lombardi said in 1967, "[...] the next time you make it to the end zone, act like you've been there before." It doesn't get much better than Mitch Holthus calling a Kansas City Chiefs football game. 7. Learning You learn the most when you screw it up the worst. If you give away all the answers freely, you're depriving someone of the satisfaction and ownership of figuring it out. Occasionally take time to think about how much you've learned and from whom. Learn enough about a topic to form an opinion. The same goes for trying new things. Be sure statements like "that's too much trouble" don't turn you into a lazy person. Often challenging tasks are the most satisfying to master. Sometimes starting over is a lot of work, but the second go-around is much faster. That's because you're smarter now than when you first started. As dad used to say, "hide and watch." If you're not sure what you should be doing, sweep, pick up and organize. Sometimes it's difficult to be sincere when you're disparaged by someone ignorant. Chalk it up to them not knowing any better. You've been in that position before. As the old Russian saying goes, "doveryai, no proveryai" -- trust, but verify. At some point, everyone has learned to wipe their own butt. Don't discount the process of getting there. The end result often isn't as lasting as what got you there. 8. Technology & The Internet If you wouldn't say it or do it to someone in person, don't post it on social media. The majority of people use the Internet not for spreading goodwill but to complain. Keep that in mind when you're reading product reviews. If something online is free, the use of your information, your connections, your location, and related activity data is the payment. Algorithms are always biased because they have objectives. What algorithm doesn't have an intended purpose? If what you're saying is important and you have the option, favor richer forms of communication where people can hear your tone and see your body language. Don't search the web for your ailments, unless you want cancer. Despite of the rigors of testing, the first version of any new software or technology is risky. You're a test subject if you partake. The second generation usually better and less expensive. 9. Business The Harley Davidson brand is essentially the same as the Apple brand, but with more leather. Be wary of any business that takes advantage of people who aren't good at math. As it's been said, "a fool and his money are soon parted". Adding more people so a project gets done faster usually has the opposite effect. The cost of the context and knowledge transfer is almost always excluded from that planning process. Plan to walk across the finish line. Capriciously changing the rules after work has started is a sure-fire way to make everyone on the implementation team mad. Just like in personal relationships, gracefully saying "no" to a prospect or client is a good way of building trust and long-term value in the relationship. Some people wear "busy", "stressed" or "overworked" like a badge. Most of the time it means their attention is so divided that they're not doing anything well. Set explicit boundaries so you are not bound to their mediocrity. If you don't have a firm grasp on the technical details of the project, don't speak and manage others as if you do. Technical misstatements are typically difficult or costly to walk back later. Theodore Roosevelt once said: "The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it." If you're going to document requirements, be sure and include "the why" not just "the how." "The how" is often obvious as time goes on, but the decision-making process and the rationale are what those that follow will seek to understand. Don't try to scale to meet increased demand without reinvesting some of the gains in the infrastructure to support it. It's not always obvious what constitutes "infrastructure," but it's critical to sustain the growth. Double-down on clients who are willing to cooperate as a partner and de-prioritize those that treat your work as a commodity. "Under-promise and over-deliver" is only possible if you know what you're doing. You can't set expectations effectively if you are not taking deliberate steps to build trust with the client stakeholders. They should have plenty of reasons to believe you when you say "this is the best way to do it." Listen for opportunities to demonstrate your team's expertise. Try to work yourself out of the loop. 10. Craftsmanship Don't assume that something simple is easy or quick to build. As DaVinci said, "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Take time to explicitly appreciate fine craftsmanship and skilled handiwork. A lot of effort probably went into it. Try to do it yourself, or at least research what's involved. If you end up paying someone else to do it, you'll have some respect for the work involved. You'll also know if you're paying a fair price. It's been said "if you want it done right, do it yourself." You can only say this if you've put a good faith effort into showing someone how to do it. 11. Religion & Politics Your beliefs aren't truly yours until they are cemented by hardship and pain. We are supposed to be judgmental, just not condemning. Wisdom and discernment are underrated. Grace is more powerful and effective than revenge or silence. Both parties becoming aware of their role in the pain is the gateway to restoration. Gently question those that speak in absolutes. Seek to understand why they believe so adamantly. Strive to determine if the strong statements are born from reflection and examination or not. Just because a visible and vocal group agrees on an issue, doesn't mean it's correct. The majority can be wrong. The loudest voice may not even represent the majority. Quietly call out hypocrisy. Start with yourself first. True science is pragmatic -- always testing and asking questions in order to form a hypothesis. Hypotheses are not always facts. Do it fairly or don't do it at all. We could significantly reduce highway traffic fatalities by reducing the speed limit to 20 miles-per-hour. Why don't we? 12. Inner Life If you tell a lie, you'll always be in bigger trouble than if you just told the truth and faced the consequences. Watch out for those "it's not that big of a deal" parts of your life. You should do something decisive about them. It's perfectly fine to be angry when you know you own an item but can't remember where you put it. Put it in a more logical place next time. Get up early and enjoy the time to yourself. 13. Perspective Honestly asking yourself "What's the worst thing that could happen?" is an effective way to keep a crisis in perspective. If everything is a high-priority, then nothing is. If everyone cuts to the front of the line, there's still a line and now the other people in line are angry. Things will not always go as planned or turn out how you envisioned. It's OK. As the poet Mike Tyson once said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." If you can't remember what clothes you wore a week ago, others won't remember either. We're often confident we know what others think about us, but most of the time we get ourselves worked up for nothing. It's good to consider who is behind the camera. We often think we are seeing what we are seeing, but in reality, we see what the camera operators, producers, and directors want us to see. There's a chance that the Yahootie actually did do it. Mom said so. If I see you littering, I'll assume you're a terrible person who doesn't care about anything. Why not hold on to it until you get to a trash can? Hey smoker, I'm gazing angrily in your direction. 14. Tools If you're a professional, you should invest in the quality tools that professionals use. Use a wooden pencil every so often.
